Herman Keizer Jr.'s journey began at Calvin College, earning a BA in philosophy and Greek in 1965. During this time, he was drafted and served on active duty at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, for two years prior to returning and finishing his degree. After receiving his bachelor's degree, he earned a BDiv in theology from Calvin Theological Seminary in 1968, MA in education from Teachers College at Columbia University in 1978 and ThM from New York Theological Seminary in 1979. He was an in-house student at U.S. Army War College, graduating in 1992.
