James R. Holland Honored as an Accomplished Author and Artist

Mr. Holland began his impressive, decades-spanning career by pursuing an education at Principia College, where he completed undergraduate coursework between 1962 and 1964. Earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ohio University in 1966, he subsequently continued his academic efforts with postgraduate coursework at the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a photography internship through the National Geographic Society in the same year. From 1967 to 1968, Mr. Holland worked for the National Geographic Society as a contract photographer for National Geographic magazine. Soon thereafter, he was active as a film producer with the Christian Science Center for Boston, Massachusetts from 1969 to 1974. Over the course of this tenure, he wrote three additional books: "The Amazon" in 1971, "Mr. Pops-Arthur Fiedler" in 1972 and "Tanglewood" in 1973. Mr. Holland also became involved with the Neighborhood Association of Back Bay in 1972.

Mr. Holland subsequently served as a real estate developer and president for Brownstone Properties Inc. in Boston between 1975 and 1977. Following these positions, he was recruited as a real estate broker for Street & Co. Inc. from 1978 to 1982. In 1980, he co-authored the second edition of "Photojournalism: Principles and Practice." Since 1982, Mr. Holland has found much success as the president of A Bit of Boston Real Estate Inc.

Between 1992 and 2002, Mr. Holland contributed as a sponsor for a team in the Babe Ruth Baseball League. He additionally sponsored Little League teams in Back Bay, Beacon Hill and North End from 1999 to 2009. Since 2009, he has likewise excelled as a columnist and a movie critic for Basil & Spice, A Partner McClatchy-Tribune News Service. Furthermore, Mr. Holland has dedicated his time and attention as an associate of the Boston Public Library and the Small Property Owners Association since 2000.

In recent years, Mr. Holland's published works have substantially expanded, including "W.O'K's Weird Wacky Wonderful World: The Art of William O'Keefe" in 2006, "Diamonds Are Waiting For You: Crater of Diamonds, Where Dreams Can And Do Come True" in 2007, "Santa's Elves Revolt" in 2008, "Waffle: A Beacon Hill Dog" in 2009 and "Politics: Puns and Parody" in 2010, to name only a few. Additionally, he authored "Seeking God: The Religious Paintings of William O'Keefe," "Fisheyes" and "Boston's Notable Addresses: Historic Homes & the Residents That Made Them So" in 2011. Having produced films that broadcasted on NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS, BBC and The Travel Channel, Mr. Holland's work has been notably represented in the permanent collections of the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, Boston Public Library, Principia College and Ohio University.

Beyond his primary professional responsibilities, Mr. Holland was formerly appointed to the Tenth Anniversary Committee of Boston University's Photographic Resource Center. He was also a producer for Twinkle Toes Videos, and an illustrator and photographer for "Continental and Colonial Currency of Colonial America." To further devote his skills and resources to his field, he has been affiliated with the Boston Home and Property Owners Association, the Griffin Museum of Photography, the North America Sport Karate Association, the National Press Photographers Association, the American Society of Media Photographers and the Samuel Fletcher and Angeline Drury Society. Mr. Holland remains distinguished as a lifetime member of the Friends of Beverly Hills Public Library, the Boston Athenaeum and the Dickerson Park Zoo.

Featured in a 2018 article titled "A Conversation With a Boston Collector on Picasso, Dali and Much More," Mr. Holland has expanded his public profile as an invited guest in various radio interviews. As a testament to his stellar endeavors, he has been presented with the Next Generation Indie Book Award, the Eric Hoffer Excellence Award, Awards from the National Press Photographers Association between 1966 and 1968, a World Press Competition Award in 1967 and a Documentary Film Award from Newsweek and Bolex in 1969. Mr. Holland was also the recipient of an Individuals Photography Film Competition Award in 1970, a Bronze Medal from the International Film and Television Festival in New York in 1971, and Awards from USA Book News in 2008 and 2009.

Recognized among Amazon's Top 500 Reviewers between 2007 and 2010, Mr. Holland was ranked as a finalist in the categories of Art and Children's Picture Book: Paperback Non-Fiction by USA Book News in 2007. In 1989, he was celebrated as a National Karate Champion by the Amateur Athletic Union and the Sixth Nationally Ranked in Weapon's Form by Reeves Sport Karate Ratings. Likewise, Mr. Holland was selected for inclusion in the 34th edition of Who's Who in Finance and Business as well as multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.

Mr. Holland has attributed his success to his primary inspiration, the "Family of Man" Exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art. Initially, he was discouraged by his experience with still life art, but his passion for photography and book review writing during his formative years fueled his artistic career. Outside of his professional accomplishments, he is incredibly proud of marrying his wife, Helen, who has helped him remain on a straight and narrow path. Looking toward the future, Mr. Holland hopes to continue thriving as a writer in the coming years.
