Dr. Gordon E. MacKinnon is a noteworthy clinical psychologist and former educator who has accrued more than 30 years of excellence in his field. Obtaining licensure to practice psychology in 1986, he has served as a licensed clinical psychologist in his own eponymously named private practice, MacKinnon Psychological Associates, since 1997. Concurrent to this role, he served Rochester University in Michigan as a professor of psychology for 20 years and chairman of the Department of Psychology until 2019. During his tenure, he also directed the MacKinnon Psychology and Counseling Clinic, named after him in 2017.
At the start of his career, from 1993 until 1994, Dr. MacKinnon completed a clinical internship and residency in psychology at the Wyandotte Hospital and Medical Center, where he would go on to work with adolescents in the center's psychiatric partial hospitalization program. Alongside his primary roles, he has volunteered for various prostate cancer support groups through the Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, for more than five years. He has also served as vice president of the Academy for the Psychoanalytic Arts and is particularly proud of penning numerous publications.
Dr. MacKinnon recalls one of the most engrossing times of his career was when he worked with a group of individuals who survived a plane crash. Living with guilt and confusion, he guided them through their challenges, ultimately growing his interest in trauma and stress response syndromes. In his work today, Dr. MacKinnon's research interests focus on the effects of medical and catastrophic trauma and stress on patient-caregiver relationships, particularly cancer patients. His teaching has included work on modeling the psychology of media phenomena in horror and speculative fiction.
Outside of his vocational endeavors, Dr. MacKinnon enjoys handset type printing on an antique letterpress printing press he purchased as a teenager. Dating back to 1886, he used the printing press to print his daughter's wedding invitations in 2013. In his spare time, he enjoys growing bonsai trees and is an amateur magician.
At the start of his academic endeavors, Dr. MacKinnon earned a Bachelor of Science in religious education from Rochester University, as well as a Bachelor of Science in human resources development from Oakland University in 1981. Six years later, he achieved a Master of Arts in marriage and family therapy from Wayne State University. Continuing his education, he attained a Doctor of Philosophy in clinical psychology in 1997 from the University of Detroit-Mercy.
As a testament to his success, Dr. MacKinnon was named Distinguished Faculty of the Year by Rochester University in 2014. In 2020, he was recognized among Top Docs in Psychology.
Looking toward the future, Dr. MacKinnon intends to remain in private practice and continue psychological consulting.
