As the newest president and co-owner of Pigman's Bar-B-Que in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, Mr. Palmer has spent over 15 years keeping the legacy alive and earning a reputation as one of the most recognized eateries in the Outer Banks. Initially established in 1985, he joined Pigman's as a manager in 2002. Subsequently purchasing the business with his longtime college friend and former roommate, Richard Bruce, they became the third owners of the establishment. Involved in every aspect of the company, Mr. Palmer oversees 25 to 30 full- and part-time employees, works closely with vendors, handles marketing and other business-related obligations, and fills in on the floor when short-staffed.
Specializing in serving their signature BBQ, including pork, beef, chicken, turkey, and tuna, which are slow-cooked over hardwood and finished with a variety of homemade, delicious sauces, Pigman's Bar-B-Que offers an extensive menu of dishes, a la carte items, sides, combos, picnics to go, children's items, and more. The restaurant also features various full-service catering options for small and large events both on- and off-site. Eager to continue growing and building the brand, Mr. Palmer plans to establish additional homemade sauces and sell their products nationally.
Heavily involved in the community, Mr. Palmer and Pigman's gives back by sponsoring several area high schools, donating food to various charities, and volunteering at a nearby food pantry. He has also been active with the YMCA of South Hampton Roads by sponsoring the organization. Affiliated with the YMCA as a personal trainer on Friday mornings, he also served as a sports coordinator at its Outer Banks location. Additionally, Mr. Palmer is a member of the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce and a member and past president of the Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, chapter of Rotary International, through which he oversaw club meetings and helped organize community activities and fundraisers in the Outer Banks.
Mr. Palmer graduated from Virginia Military Institute with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology in 2001. During his undergraduate years, he played collegiate basketball with his business partner from Pigman's.
In light of his success as a restaurateur, Mr. Palmer's restaurant received a Best of the Beach Award in 2023. The Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce named Pigman's as the Community Partner of the Year in 2022, and named the restaurant Small Business of the Year (2019). Moreover, Pigman's Bar-B-Que was ranked Second Best Restaurant on Outer Banks in the Virginian-Pilot in 2017.
