With more than a decade of excellence in engineering, Dr. L'Afflitto has earned distinction as an associate professor for Virginia Tech. Having joined the university in 2019 as an assistant professor, he has focused his efforts on advising students in the master's degree and Doctor of Philosophy programs while teaching courses in manufacturing engineering, including lightweight robotics, control theory and autonomous robots and unmanned systems.
Outside of his primary career efforts, Dr. L'Afflitto serves as the senior editor for the autonomous systems track in IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems and several other editorial roles within IEEE and AIAA. Additionally, he served as an associate editor for Elsevier's journal Control Engineering Practice and has contributed numerous articles to other professional journals throughout his career.
Before joining Virginia Tech, Dr. L'Afflitto began his career as an intern and system engineer for the Consortium of Research of Advanced Remote Sensing Systems in 2004 and for the Italian Space Agency in 2006. Following this time, he was a systems and control engineer for DLR from 2007 to 2008 and took a role as an intern for mathematical modeling with Fermilab in 2013. He continued his career as an assistant professor with The University of Oklahoma from 2015 to 2019.
Among Dr. L'Afflitto's professional accomplishments, he is proud to have received a Young Faculty Award from DAPRA in 2018. Regarding his research, he is best known for his theoretical results created for controlling dynamical systems, some of which have been successfully ported to the army or the navy while others are in the process of being certified.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. L'Afflitto earned a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering in 2004 and a master's degree in the same field in 2006, both from Università degli Studi di Napoli in Italy. Following these achievements, he attained a master's degree in mathematics from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2011 and a Doctor of Philosophy in aerospace engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2015.
Looking to the future, Dr. L'Afflitto intends to become a fellow with the IEEE and AIAA, as they are the two main societies for his niche. He and his team also plan to create autonomous systems that are more resilient to damages or uncertainties and are therefore safer for use, particularly in civilian applications.
