After more than 30 years as a commissioned U.S. Foreign Service officer (diplomat) and senior executive for the U.S. Department of State, Ms. Slutz retired.

After more than 30 years as a commissioned U.S. Foreign Service officer (diplomat) and senior executive for the U.S. Department of State, Ms. Slutz retired. Ms. Slutz served at U.S. embassies and consulates in Asia and Africa and as a member of the U.S. Delegation to the Nuclear and Space Talks with the USSR in Geneva from 1987 to 1989. Her distinguished career included two ambassadorships, initially in Mongolia from 2003 to 2006 and subsequently in Burundi between 2009 and 2012. She counts among her accomplishments the establishment of shelters for victims of domestic abuse in Mongolia; resettlement in the U.S. of a dozen Chinese political dissidents and their families; and compensation for Kenyan employees of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi who were victims of the 1998 terrorist bombing of the embassy.
Passionate about public service and representing the American people overseas, Ms. Slutz found additional success in the nonprofit sector. Following her retirement from the U.S. Foreign Service, she served as the chairman of the North America-Mongolia Business Council until 2016, advocating on behalf of the interests of U.S. and Canadian companies invested in Mongolia. Since 2019, as president of The Mongolia Society, a nonprofit organization that promotes the study of Mongolia in all its facets through its publication series, annual scholarly conference, and document/library service; Ms. Slutz has focused on building people-to-people and institutional and organizational relationships to create a broader awareness of Mongolia and its importance in world affairs.
Ms. Slutz attended Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia, earning a Bachelor of Arts in politics. She also garnered a Master of Arts degree in Southeast Asian studies from the University of Hawaii/Manoa, where she was notably selected to be a fellow of the East-West Center.
In recognition of her diplomatic achievements, Ms. Slutz received several Superior Performance Honor Awards from the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Presidential Rank Award of Meritorious Executive (in 2011). In recognition of her contributions to promoting people-to-people and institutional relationships between the U.S. and Mongolia, Ms. Slutz was also recognized by the president of Mongolia in 2015 with the Order of the Polar Star, the highest state award given to a non-Mongolian citizen.
