Dr. Wilmoth is a retired senior officer of the U.S. Army and a nurse who has also maintained a long and successful career in academia. Affiliated with the University of North Carolina (UNC) in the Chapel Hill School of Nursing since 2017, she notably spent five years as the inaugural executive vice dean and an associate dean for academic affairs on campus from 2017 to 2022. In addition to her commitments at UNC, Dr. Wilmoth has taught as an adjunct professor at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences since 2018.
Prior to this Dr. Wilmoth was the inaugural dean at the Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing and Health Professions at Georgia State University. She is professor emeritus, UNC Charlotte. During an earlier stage of her career, Dr. Wilmoth was recognized as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellow from 2009 to 2010, helping to provide the nation with the most comprehensive learning experience in health, science, and policy in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Wilmoth honorably served her country in the U.S. Army, was promoted to brigadier general in 2005, and became recognized as the first nurse and female to command a medical brigade as a general officer. During her distinguished tenure, she commanded the 332nd Medical Brigade, the 5th Medical Group, and the 312th Field Hospital, having reached the rank of major general before retiring. Her final assignment was as deputy surgeon general in the Office of the Surgeon General, U.S. Army, from 2014 to 2017.
Dr. Wilmoth pursued an education at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Nursing. Subsequently, she was selected to attend the U.S. Army War College, receiving a master's degree in strategic studies. Moreover, Dr. Wilmoth earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania.
As part of her professional commitments, Dr. Wilmoth remains active as a member of the North Carolina Institute of Medicine, an elected fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, and a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit. She also served as a former chairperson of the health services committee and the executive committee of the Reserve Officers Association and as a fellow, co-chair, and member of the military veterans health expert panel for the American Academy of Nursing. Additionally, Dr. Wilmoth is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International and currently serves on the board of trustees for the U.S. Army War College Foundation.
Honoring her accomplishments, Dr. Wilmoth was inducted into the U.S. Anny Women's Foundation Hall of Fame in 2020. She attributes much of her professional success to her family as well as her drive, work ethic, tenacity, and leadership capabilities. Thankful for all her opportunities, Dr. Wilmoth believes she is one of the privileged few who was able to follow a career path that she became interested in while coming of age.
