Ms. Merilus has found tremendous success as the owner of Ebenezer in Maryland for more than 20 years. A local grocery store specializing in Caribbean foods, she sells a large selection of products from her native Haiti and neighboring countries. A welcoming and customer service-driven professional, Ms. Merilus has developed a significant clientele throughout the area for her goods and services.
When Ms. Merilus first came to the U.S. over 30 years ago, she recognized a real need for her market. The growing Haitian population leveraged her ability to open her doors, provide native foods to customers, and engage with them in her native language to help them acclimate. Initially, Ms. Merilus opened a small shop called Lulu's Mini Market. After substantial growth, she expanded operations by relocating to a much larger storefront that her brother owned. Keeping its original name, Ebenezer remains an enormous influence in the community.
Working alongside her husband, Ms. Merilus begins her day at 10 a.m. and remains at the store until closing each day at 9 p.m. Attributing her ongoing achievements to her work ethic, passion for the industry, and support and acceptance of the community, she looks forward to future success in serving the community.
As a token of her gratitude, Ms. Merilus has become very active locally as a compassionate leader, listener, and communicator. In addition to lending her time as a translator for those requiring her expertise, she collaborates with her husband, a pastor at Alliance Missionary Church. Ms. Merilus frequently participates in ministry work and activities for children. She also helps assist those in need.
Because of her success translating for residents, Ms. Merilus was sought out by the local school system to help with the translation needs of students. She continues to provide this support as needed.
Born on a small island in Haiti, Ms. Merilus lost her mother at age 14. After graduating high school, she moved to Port-au-Prince for higher education, receiving a business degree in 1989. Shortly thereafter, she left for the U.S. to pursue her dream of becoming a business owner in 1990. Ms. Merilus began studying English as a second language and attended another nearby institution to pursue additional courses.
In light of her accomplishments, Ms. Merilus received a Martin Luther King Jr. Award in 2022 and a Five Star Award in 2023.
