Mr. Obee is an emeritus professor of philosophy and English who taught at his alma mater, Saint Clair County Community College, for over four decades. Hired as a faculty member in 1967, he rose from an instructor to a full professor. He also served as the English department chair in 1970 and between 1972 and 1973, chair of the philosophy discipline for many years and the chair of the student assessment committee from 1988 to 1993. He then became the director of writing assessments between 1993 and 1997. Additionally, Mr. Obee was active on campus as chair of the academic review committee for several years and a member for over 40 years.
During his distinguished tenure at Saint Clair, Mr. Obee was chosen to help recreate the honors program and became the director from 1997 to 2010. He also spent much time in recent years in preparation for the college's 100th-year celebration, which involved researching retired faculty, administration, and staff to determine who was eligible for recognition.
Mr. Obee has been engaged in various civic and nonprofit initiatives for decades, beginning as a precinct delegate for the Saint Clair County Democratic Committee during the late 1960s. He also served on the board of directors for the Nursery Day-Care School in Richmond, Michigan, as a faculty representative for the Truman Foundation, and as a member of the college's Professional Rights and Responsibilities Committee for 11 years. Mr. Obee has continued to support the Jack Kent Cocke Scholarship since 2004. He was also a member of NEA and MEA throughout his entire career. Mr. Obee served as vice president of the local chapter of the Michigan Association for Higher Education for 11 years and was a member of the union's executive board for most of his career. He was the advisor to his college chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society for 35 years, and was that organization's regional coordinator from 1997 until 2010.
After graduating from Saint Clair County Community College in 1963 with an Associate of Arts, Mr. Obee received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan in 1965. He was subsequently accepted to the University of Wisconsin, through which he received a Master of Arts in 1966 and completed additional coursework toward a doctorate. In retirement, Mr. Obee remains a prominent member of the Retirees Association of Saint Clair County Community College.
In light of his success in the classroom, Mr. Obee was honored as the inaugural recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award from Saint Clair County Community College in 1989 and with a Distinguished Faculty Award from the college in 1997. He also won 10 International Distinguished Advisor Awards, Distinguished Regional Coordinator Awards, and a Centralis Award. Mr. Obee attributes his success to his faith. He currently serves as a lector at several Catholic parishes. In addition, he is a member-presenter for a scholarly discussion group.
