Recognized as a professor emeritus at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center since 2015, Dr. Miller has led a distinguished career at the institution, teaching and chairing the department of pharmaceutical sciences. Having taught undergraduate and graduate college students for 40 years, he was recruited to Tennessee after a distinguished tenure at The Ohio State University as a professor and medicinal chemistry department chairperson from 1969 to 1992.
As a seasoned researcher and expert in medicinal chemistry, Dr. Miller has enjoyed conducting collaborative research in various areas with faculty experts in their particular areas of study. Among his contributions, he successfully designed and synthesized several new cancer drugs. He most notably created Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (SARMs), the first non-steroidal compound that works similarly to testosterone. Dr. Miller has over 100 U.S. patents and patents pending.
More recently, Dr. Miller conducted research funded by National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants with several colleagues. Their studies included researching glioblastomas, a very deadly brain cancer. Dr. Miller and his team have also collaborated with several biotechnology firms, Veru in Florida and Oncternal Therapeutics in San Diego, to support their work.
Dr. Miller has disseminated much of his prostate and breast cancer studies in professional papers. He has authored and co-authored over 480 scholarly articles and reports in such publications as the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry and the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. Moreover, Dr. Miller has contributed chapters in over 15 scientific books. Besides his writing contributions, he has presented his work at over 340 national and international meetings.
Highly educated in his respective field, Dr. Miller obtained a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy from the University of Kansas in 1966 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Washington in 1969. He has remained active in his professional community as a dedicated member of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and the American Chemical Society. Dr. Miller is also a member, former chairperson of the medicinal chemistry division, and former committee member of the American Chemical Society.
As a testament to his success, Dr. Miller was inducted into the National Academy of Inventors and the Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame of the American Chemical Society.
