As a result of growing up in an unstable home, experiencing abuse, homelessness, and tragic loss, Ms. Conway faced many challenges in pursuit of her education and a career in health care. While her dream was to become a doctor, she had limited resources to draw on, which propelled her to chart an alternate path and career goal. She set her sights on nursing and did not let any obstacles deter her as she put herself through community college working in the hospitality industry and as a housekeeper in a hospital, slowly navigating a way into the field she was passionate about.
On her path to a career in health care, Ms. Conway first served as an emergency room technician at Grand View Hospital in Sellersville, Pennsylvania. She knew she needed to gain some experience in the field to help ensure a job upon graduation with an Associate in Applied Science of Nursing from Montgomery County Community College in Pennsylvania. Upon graduation in 2014, she accepted a temporary position as an employee health nurse at Reading Hospital which is part of the Tower Health System eventually networking to a staff position in the busiest emergency room in Pennsylvania. There, she gained a variety of health- and trauma-informed experience. She was part of the team of nurses that achieved the prestigious Lantern Award awarded by the Emergency Nurses Association in 2018. Additionally, she completed a Trauma Nursing Core Course and acquired certification in pediatric advanced life support and advanced cardiac life support. Ms. Conway went onto attain her Bachelor of Science in Nursing by Wilmington University in 2018 while working as a registered nurse and raising her children. Ms. Conway currently works for the Lehigh Valley Health System in an emergency room in Pennsylvania.
Ms. Conway has applied her years of experience working in an ER setting since 2013 to the simple cases and life-saving scenarios she encounters each day. Moreover, she survived operating in the busiest emergency rooms in Pennsylvania during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Though navigating this time in a hospital setting equipped her with new knowledge and an appreciation for her fellow colleagues' capacity to step into roles outside their usual designations, she regards this period of her career as one of the most challenging to date, as she experienced stressful and emotionally taxing conditions while caring for patients and contracting and recovering from COVID-19 herself.
Because of her lived experiences, Ms. Conway leads with compassion and thrives in challenging situations. She possesses a willingness to collaborate, change, and be flexible—necessary traits when working in the ever-changing, fast-paced environment of the emergency room. Along with being a mother, her most noteworthy accomplishment is the time she spent as an emergency room nurse. In this role, she learned to draw on her own hardships as a way to better empathize with those she encounters and cares for.
