A family-owned and operated business, Dr. Basak-Smith purchased his veterinary hospital in 1997 with his late wife, Molly Basik-Smith, who was the practice manager. He also has three sons, two of whom work alongside him at the facility. Dr. Basak-Smith's one son is involved in integrative veterinary medicine, and the other recently graduated from veterinary school and became licensed.
Dr. Basak-Smith recently introduced a new line of microbiotics for animals, which has proven to provide excellent results. He draws a sense of satisfaction in being able to help animals and provide them with a proper diet. Aside from his ongoing success in veterinary medicine, Dr. Basak-Smith is devoted to developing his property, planting fruit trees, and growing berries and vegetables. He has been active in various sports competitions, such as the World Championship Iron Man in Kona and the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in California, and is an open-water swimmer.
After high school, Dr. Basak-Smith enlisted in the U.S. Air Force as part of the special operations pararescue team. While serving, he began gaining medical expertise and performing traumatic and other types of surgeries on animals, which led him to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. Dr. Basak-Smith notably studied at Cornell University, earning a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Upon graduation, he garnered experience at Pittsford Animal Hospital in Rochester, NY before establishing himself in private practice.
