Leading a long and successful career as a government official, Mr. de Michaelis retired in 2010 as a branch chief for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Washington, D.C. During his distinguished tenure with the organization, which spanned four decades, he also taught as a professor of finance at his alma mater, American University, in Washington, D.C., from 1980 to 1985.
The SEC is recognized as an independent federal agency based in Washington, D.C., with more than 10 regional offices throughout the country. The organization oversees securities exchanges, securities brokers and dealers, investment advisors, and mutual funds to promote fair dealing, the disclosure of important market information, and the prevention of fraud.
Mr. de Michaelis has spoken or been a regular panelist at the SEC Speaks Conference, the ICI Securities Law Procedures Conference, The International Institute for Securities Market Development and the Emerging Markets Conference.
A leader in his community, Mr. de Michaelis is a former finance committee member of the Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C., a private social club for men and women. He has also served as an investment committee member for the Episcopal Diocese Investment Fund in Washington since 1985. Likewise, Mr. de Michaelis has been affiliated with the National Italian American Foundation, whose mission is to promote and protect Italian American heritage, as well as the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation, which serves to promote the causes of religion, education, and charity, and the Washington National Cathedral, an American cathedral of the Episcopal Church in which he aims to encourage people to consider in their charitable giving and estate planning.
Mr. de Michaelis graduated from the Lawrence Academy in Groton, Massachusetts, in 1963. He subsequently received a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and economics from Boston College in 1967 and a Master of Business Administration in finance from American University in 1969.
Active in his professional community, Mr. de Michaelis is a member of the American Economic Association, the American Finance Association, and the Washington Society of Investment Analysts.
