As a result of attending North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, Dr. Sequeira benefited from the mentorship of Dr. Louis Kucera, a trailblazer in the field of HIV research, who played a crucial role in encouraging his scientific pursuits. He went on to attend Duke University and graduated in 2003 in the upper quartile of his class, with academic distinction, earning a place on the Dean's List and National Dean's List. While pursuing his Bachelor of Science in chemistry and a minor in biology, Dr. Sequeira received fellowship through HHMI Institute to work as a junior research associate at Duke as well as a junior research associate at University of North Carolina Health.
Following his education at Duke, Dr. Sequeira spent time as a laboratory technician in the cancer biology and radiation oncology departments at Wake Forest School of Medicine from 2003 to 2006. Thereafter, he was accepted into the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, where he earned a Doctor of Medicine in 2014. He then took on the position of biomedical lecturer and instructor at Forsyth Technical Community College, from 2014 to 2020. During his time teaching, Dr. Sequeira worked in the department of internal and molecular medicine at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center as a post-doctoral clinical research fellow from 2015 to 2017 before moving on to fulfill the role of medical science innovation liaison and senior research fellow at Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM), a position he held from 2017 to 2021.
During the latter part of his time at WFIRM, where he was honing his expertise in oncology and algorithms related to the image analysis of cancer tissue, Dr. Sequeira worked to broaden the scope of his education. In 2022, he received a Master of Business Administration, with concentrations in technology and innovation, entrepreneurship, marketing, and data analytics, from North Carolina State University. While working towards his master's degree, he interned in the global human health division at Merck. Over the course of his educational and research career, Dr. Sequeira has authored and co-authored a number of papers focused on cell and tissue research, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, and nanomedicine, centering on women's health, particularly in the realm of fertility preservation for cancer patients. Since 2022, Dr. Sequeira has acted as a medical and scientific liaison at F. Hoffmann-La Roche AG, commonly known as Roche, a Swiss multinational healthcare company. His shift from academia to the health care industry was prompted by the work he did both in his post-doctoral research fellowship at Wake Forest School of Medicine and for his publications and patent obtainment. At Roche, Dr. Sequeira is involved in the domain of oncology assays and diagnostics, functioning within the division of medical and scientific affairs. In his role, he collaborates with physicians to provide education on Roche's latest technology or assays designed to run on medical instruments. In addition to this, he orchestrates studies to promote these assays, not from a marketing-focused angle but to prioritize scientific goals and emphasize the alignments of physicians' objectives with those of Roche.
As a result of his degrees and involvement in academia and research, Dr. Sequeira has obtained membership in numerous national STEM associations, such as the American Association of Anatomists, the American Association of Geneticists, the American Association of Cancer Researchers, and the American Medical Association, to name a few. Moreover, he has served as co-president of the Wake Forest University Postdoc Association since 2017. Along with his educational and research pursuits, Dr. Sequeira has always devoted time to volunteering and civic engagement. While at Duke, he participated in the Adopt-a-Grandparent program, through which he dedicated his efforts to visiting older adults who lacked regular companionship. Since 2017, he has held membership with Toastmasters International and actively participates in volunteer work at soup kitchens and at the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
In the next five years, Dr. Sequeira aspires to ascend to a managerial position, either within Roche or at another reputable company in the pharmaceutical or diagnostics sector. Ultimately, he aims to hold a director-level role in which he can handle strategic responsibilities and exert more influence in the decision-making process regarding new diagnostic or therapeutics products informed by the latest literature and innovative advancements. Dr. Sequeira's desire to continue to grow and excel can be traced back to the hardships he endured as a child and witnessing both his parents strive for more in the pursuit of their graduate education. These experiences instilled in him a strong work ethic and a steadfast resolve to continue striving towards a better future.
