While attending The Ohio State University, while pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Economics, Brett was involved in community programs; John Glenn Civic Leadership Council, Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity, and worked as an extern at the Ohio Attorney General's Office. He went on to The University of Pittsburgh, School of Law inspired by the opportunity to study under Prof. Alan Meisel, the Director of the Health Law Certificate Program, former Dean Mary Crossley, Associate Dean of Students Kevin Deasy, and most importantly, Allie Linsenmeyer in Admissions. Brett completed his studies in 2013 while also participating in many externships, and internships where he gained experience in a myriad of areas of healthcare and law.
Brett worked under Ms. Linda Shaffer at the Central Legal Staff for the Superior Court of Pennsylvania, the Honorable Mary Jane Bowes, served at the Allegheny county APPRISE organization, clerked for Harry S. Cohen & Associates, Morton B. DeBroff, Mary Austin in the UPMC Corporate Legal Department, and under Karen Engro at a Healthcare Alternative Dispute Resolution Practicum at the Western District Court of Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh. Additionally, Brett was a campus representative for Themis Bar Review providing information to pending Bar exam candidates. Brett also participated in two health law competitions; Loyola of Chicago Health Law Transactional competition, (3rd of 18 teams – teammates Alison (Bush) Andronic, Bryan Murray) and the University of Maryland Health Law Regulatory & Compliance competition (teammates Schevon Salmon & Bryan Murray). Finally, Brett was awarded the ABA-BNA Award for Excellence in the Study of Health Law by Prof. Alan Meisel.
Upon graduating and passing the North Carolina Bar exam, Brett worked as a document reviewer at Synergy Legal Staffing before moving to Shapiro & Ingle, LLP where he worked as a substitute trustee in foreclosure and title search law. He joined Pharmaceutical Product Development in 2015 as a contract specialist and then associate contract manager. His work focused on working with clinical institutions and pharmaceutical company Sponsors. After that, Brett moved to Inivata where he gained the most fulfillment of his professional career. He worked as the sole legal representative for the company that specialized in liquid biopsy for non-small cell lung cancer in IIIB patients. He was part of a team of individuals that was granted CMS reimbursement for their "simple" blood test that provided diagnostic value to physicians and patients alike. Next Brett worked at Adheris Health with its parent company MedAdvisor located in Melbourne, Australia. Adheris specialized in patient adherence messaging; pharmacy bag-tags, in-home letters, and SMS messaging for patient medication re-fill reminders.
Brett is most proud of his work at IQVIA as an attorney in its global legal department. Brett was a member of a four person group that worked on behalf of the clinical (Quintiles) and commercial (IMS Health) business pillars under IQVIA's General Counsel, Eric Sherbet. Brett was deputized to provide advice to IQVIA colleagues with a global scope. Brett attributes his fortunate exposure in the pharmaceutical arena to his parents Georgia (Kivlan) and Robert (Bob) Anthony. Their experience in the healthcare space over the last 40 years inspired Brett to provide his time and knowledge to the underprivileged and underserved.
Brett is looking forward to the next chapter in his career, hopefully with a law firm that will provide him the opportunity to design a healthcare, pharmaceutical, and clinical trials consulting department that will serve community hospitals and clinics trying to navigate the ever-complex healthcare and pharmaceutical arena.
