A distinguished veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Mr. Brown enjoyed a fulfilling, 22-year career in the military that involved two tours in Vietnam. Since retiring from the armed forces in 1982, he has gone on to author numerous books and articles and to assume a leadership role in the civic life of his North Carolina community. Mr. Brown is the founder of Pine Properties Inc., and David Brown Associates, and he is a consultant for the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy.
Born in 1939 during World War II, Mr. Brown witnessed both the tumultuousness of wartime and the struggles of its aftermath. As a teenager, he was introduced to the legendary Hollywood icon John Wayne, along with his artful portrayal of a U.S. Marine; this left a lasting impression on Mr. Brown that inspired him to pursue a career in the Marine Corps. In the service from 1960 to 1982, he worked as an associate professor of economics in the U.S. Naval Academy, head of the Marine Corps Procurement Budget, an advisor, Rifle Company Commander, and finally retired as a lieutenant colonel. During these years of service, he was recognized with a Navy Achievement Medal, a Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V," five Air Medals, two Bronze Star Medals with Combat "V," a Legion of Merit and a Silver Star Medal.
Upon returning to civilian life, Mr. Brown embarked on a prolific writing career. His published works have included Battlelines, released in 2005, an intriguing novel that portrays the heroic deeds of Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment during its five years in Vietnam. His second novel, Bandits Below, is about the birth of the Marine Corps' Air-Ground Team in Nicaragua during the 1920s and was published in 2018. His third novel, The Pound: Devil Dogs War in Nicaragua, was published in 2019. His fourth, Devil's Den, published in 2020, which retells an unfortunate incident that occurred in Beirut in 1983. His latest book, Shoulders to Stand On, which will be published in 2023, tells of the brave and inspiring Black Marines of World War II and beyond who overcame segregation. In addition, Mr. Brown has authored 15 articles in the Marine Corps Gazette and Amphibious Warfare Review, along with books on training, automated information systems, and logistics.
Known for his contributions as a civic-minded citizen, Mr. Brown is the founder and president emeritus of Veterans Memorial Garden in Swansboro, a three-acre park designed for veterans to visit with loved ones and reminisce about the past. Other leadership roles include chair of the Swansboro Area Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee, former board chair of the Carolina Museum of the Marine, and former executive director of the Second Marine Division Association. Mr. Brown is also active with the Friends of the Swansboro Library. His community efforts have been recognized with a 2023 Governor Mifflin High School Distinguished Alumni Award, a 2023 Greater Swansboro Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year Award, and a 2021 place in the Regiment of Retired Marines Hall of Fame.
