Having devoted his entire career to serving his country in various capacities, Mr. Michel is presently employed by the U.S. Navy as a system engineering team lead. Serving with the Navy's Strategic Systems Programs Missile Branch since 2021, he manages a team of systems engineering defense acquisition professionals. As the Support Equipment Engineering Team Lead, Mr. Michel is directly responsible for the development and delivery of various types of equipment that support the Trident II D5 strategic weapon systems.
Well-versed in other areas of the systems engineering field, Mr. Michel worked for the U.S. Army between 2007 and 2021, beginning as an electronics engineer and moving into the roles of supervisory program manager, supervisory program officer, and senior electronics engineer. Additionally, he found success as an electronics engineer for the U.S. Coast Guard from 1995 to 2007. Passionate about his profession, Mr. Michel draws a sense of satisfaction in his work and aspires to challenge the youth to give back to their country by considering similar careers. His main advice to young people: get out of your comfort zone and stay there.
Throughout his tenure, Mr. Michel has gained increasing responsibility in all areas of design, installation, integration, project management, systems acquisitions, and interagency and intra-agency negotiations. He has also developed key processes, procedures, and practices, has become a subject matter expert on various complex systems acquisition projects, and has managed numerous multi-million-dollar contracts on behalf of several branches of the military. Looking forward to future success, Mr. Michel aims to progress into a Senior Technical or Senior Executive Service position.
Active locally, Mr. Michel has been serving on the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) scholarship evaluation committee for the Community Foundation of Harford County Inc. The organization is based in Bel Air, Maryland, and serves as a one-stop shop for supporting the needs of Harford County. Two of the students that Joseph selected for the scholarship award in previous years are now at the top of their class at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Highly educated in his field, Mr. Michel earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, magna cum laude with Senior First honors, from Drexel University in 2003 and a Master of Science in Engineering Management from Southern Methodist University in 2011. He also received numerous relevant credentials, including Level III Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) certifications in engineering, test and evaluation, and program management through Defense Acquisition University in 2009, 2009, and 2012, respectively. Additionally, Mr. Michel received designation as a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) through the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISC2).
Affiliated with several industry-related organizations supporting his career, Mr. Michel is presently active with the International Information System Security Certification Consortium. He is also a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. As a veteran of Active Duty Army and still serving with the Army National Guard as a Chief Warrant Officer 4, Mr. Michel is active with the U.S. Army Warrant Officers Association.
In recognition of his devotion to his country during Active Duty service at the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), Mr. Michel was decorated with a Defense Meritorious Service Medal for his contributions to the cybersecurity capabilities delivered by the Joint Regional Security Stack (JRSS) Portfolio Management Office in 2020. His persistence and resilience have contributed significantly to his success.
