An expert in her field, she earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry with a minor in mathematics from Spellman College in 1989 and a Master of Public Health in international health with a minor in epidemiology from Emory University in 1992. Subsequently, Dr. Lemma expanded upon her professional knowledge, earning a Master of Philosophy in tropical medicine with a specialization in parasitology and a PhD in tropical medicine with specializations in immunology and epidemiology from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
In recognition of her professional achievements, Dr. Lemma has been honored on many occasions, earning fellowships through Rotary International and the National Institute of Health, and Certificates of Appreciation through Jimma University, Amhara Regional Health Bureau, Oromia Regional Health Bureau, Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Ras Desta Damtew Memorial Hospital, Mekele University's College of Health Sciences.
