WEST LAFAYETTE, IN, October 19, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Amanda P. De Souza, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Leveraging more than a decade of excellence in plant science, Dr. De Souza has earned distinction as a plant physiologist. In 2023, she joined Inari Agriculture and has focused her efforts on helping to lead the product development team as a prototype characterization lead. Her job involves evaluating phenotypical traits of interest for main world crops, and developing new methods to screen gene edited lines. These include designing greenhouse and field-testing protocols, ensuring all seed is available on schedule and recommending potential genetic edits for subsequent testing.
Prior to joining Inari Agriculture, Dr. De Souza began her career as a visiting scholar with Purdue University in 2006 joining one of the most prestigious research laboratories in plant cell wall. In 2010, she secured a patent for "Genes associated to sucrose content" in sugarcane. She became a Ph.D. in Plant Physiology and Biochemistry with Universidade de São Paulo in Brazil in 2011. During this time, she also was a visiting researcher for the Energy BioScience Institute of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2009 and served as a scientific manager for the National Institute of Science and Technology for Bioethanol from 2009 until 2014.
Dr. De Souza continued her career as a research fellow with the Universidade de São Paulo from 2011 to 2015, and after that joined the Institute of Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as a post-doctoral researcher in the distinguished multimillionaire project "Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency" (RIPE). She subsequently served as a plant research scientist for the same project at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2022.
During her career, Dr. De Souza has published more than 60 scientific publications including book chapters and peer-reviewed scientific articles. Her discoveries on cassava's photosynthesis were featured on the cover of the journal New Phytologist, a top 10 scientific journal in plant sciences. Additionally, in 2022, her research with increased photosynthetic efficiency in soybean was promoted on the cover of Science Magazine, one of the world's top academic journals. She is also a member of the "Goalkeepers Community," a group dedicated to doing innovative work to accelerate the progress toward the 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development.
Before embarking on her professional journey, Dr. De Souza earned a Bachelor of Science in Biological Science from Universidade Metodista de São Paulo in Brazil in 2004 and a Master of Science in Plant Cell Biology from Universidade Estadual de Campinas in 2007. Following these achievements, she attained a Doctor of Philosophy in Plant Physiology and Biochemistry from Universidade de São Paulo in 2011, focusing her research on discovering some essential genes that regulate how sugarcane responds to elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide and how that can affect sugar production.
Within the coming years, Dr. De Souza intends to grow her success in her position while helping the company develop its first product and helping to create a new era in agricultural technology. Accounting for her success thus far, she credits her resiliency and possessing an achiever mentality, driven by her personal goals.
