Lesley Koplow is the founding director of the Center for Emotionally Responsive Practice at Bank Street College, a role she accepted in 1998. In this prominent position, she and her staff collaborated to support teachers and children in educational contexts with classroom friendly mental health resources. Recently retired from Bank Street, she continues to work independently through the Schools That Heal Network, which she initiated in 2011. Ms. Koplow has been a mental health consultant for a local Head Start program for 44 years, as well as a child therapist in private practice.
Ms. Koplow cultivated a sincere interest in young children as an adolescent and avidly pursued opportunities to work with them in various settings. Distinct academic accomplishments and formal training shape her professional presence. She earned a bachelor's degree in child development from New College before pursuing a Master of Science in early childhood special education from Bank Street College, and subsequently completing a second Masters in Social Work from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College.
As a prolific author, Ms. Koplow disseminates engaging content for young children as well as scholarly content for professionals. She has written several books for teachers and clinicians, including Unsmiling Faces: How Preschools Can Heal, (1996, 2007), Creating Schools That Heal: Real-Life Solutions, (2002), Bears, Bears, Everywhere! Supporting Children's Emotional Health in the Classroom, (2008) Our Children and Their Teachers in Score Driven Times, (2014) and Emotionally Responsive Practice: A Path for Schools that Heal. (2021) During the Covid crisis, Ms. Koplow wrote and illustrated several books for children, including Lilah in the Land of the Littles, Jasmine's Big Idea, and Wilson's Wishes: Stories for Children in the Time of Covid. She subsequently wrote and illustrated a second children's book series, including Popcorn Comes to School: The Story of a Kitten in Kindergarten, Popcorn's Lost and Found, and Ellie the Deli Cat Finds a Friend.
Creativity and autonomy are foundational to Ms. Koplow's achievement thus far, and her work has been recognized by several notable accolades, including the Distinguished Alumni Award from Bank Street College in May 2023, as well as the graduate school's Thomases Award in 2016. In 2013, she received the Emily Fenichel Award for Leadership from Zero to Three, an organization honoring professionals who have made significant contributions in the field of infant and toddler development.
