Currently, Mr. Miller is a prolific author with five books to his credit, including "The 4th Marine Brigade at Belleau Wood and Soissons: History and Battlefield Guide" disseminated by the University of Kansas Press in 2020, and "From Shanghai to Corregidor: Marines in the Defense of the Philippines, published in 2013. As a historian and author, he has approached diverse topics, including World War I and the battles the Marines fought during the lengthy conflict. Mr. Miller has also researched and published content on World War II, the Banana War in China and the Desert Storm conflict.
Mr. Miller is humbled to extend a family legacy of literary success, as his grandmother, Caroline Miller, won a Pulitzer Prize and was included in a Marquis Who's Who compilation in 1933. Notably, Mr. Miller has also thrived on the opportunity to uncover the inestimable contributions of the first women to serve in the Marines; he has recorded comprehensive data regarding their tenure in the military, dating as early as World War I, and uncovered their paths to respect and esteem.
Mr. Miller's professional experience is exemplary and unique. In 1983, he was named the director of the Marine Corps Archives, Marine Corps History Division, and in 2013, he accepted the role of special projects historian of the World War I Centennial Commemoration, Marine Corps History Division, a role in which he excelled through 2016. He managed a concurrent appointment as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Mary Washington between 2013 and 2017 before transitioning to the appointment of historian and archivist emeritus of the Marine Corps History Division. In his scholarly and creative endeavors, Mr. Miller relies on outstanding academic training including a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Alabama and a Master of Arts in history from Virginia Tech. He also maintains memberships in the Marine Corps Historical Foundation, The Company of Military Historians and the Civil War Trust.
Mr. Miller is humbled by his role in honoring the Marines with whom he has worked, securing both audio and video documentation of their primary histories to display the emotion and pride the servicemembers harbor about their service and sacrifice; he is also gratified to provide these heroes' families with rich information, in many cases presenting previously unknown details, about each Marine's time in the armed forces.
J. Michael is an expert in battlefield interpretation and preservation, leading countless military staff rides and civilian tours over Civil War, War of 1812, Mexican War, Revolutionary War, and World War I ground. His efforts were important at the North Anna and Bristoe Station battlefields. Not only did he lead the historical efforts to save and establish both battlefields, Mr. Miller designed six miles of interpretive trails at North Anna with multiple signs along the trails with quotes and photographs. He did the same for the 140 acres of Bristoe Station Heritage Park, establishing 2.6 miles of trails, accompanied by interpretive signage along the paths. Similar efforts were made in the preservation of the Revolutionary battlefields of Brandywine and Princeton.
He has presented scholarly papers and research in historical archives and seminars/meetings in North America, along with international research/presentations in France, Great Britain, and Mexico.
