With more than three decades of excellence in overseeing employee safety in the natural gas industry, Mr. Newman has earned distinction as the president of the Gas Workers Union Local 18007, an internal labor union specifically dedicated to the employees of Peoples Gas in Chicago. Having been a crew leader with the Union since 2001, since 2023 he has focused his efforts on identifying and forecasting new development opportunities for union members and their families, establishing collaborative connections with city and state officials to gain valuable insights into the future of the natural gas sector in Chicago. He is also a valued member of the Chicago Chamber of Commerce.
Additionally, Mr. Newman is the owner, operator and recording engineer for an independent music label. He lends his talents to collaborative efforts with musicians, artists, and city officials for various events. He is also a professional member of the Recording Academy of the Midwest Grammy chapter.
Before his current position, Mr. Newman served as a laborer with the Gas Workers Union Local 18007 from 1991 until 2001 when he became a crew leader. He was promoted to a union steward in 2014, to a recording secretary in 2016 and then to the vice president treasurer in 2018. Also dedicated to civil advocacy, he volunteers as a mentor with the Utility Workers Military Assistance Program, which is dedicated to facilitating the integration of military veterans into the workforce. He is also a member of the 100 Club of Illinois, an organization dedicated to providing support to the families of police officers, firefighters and other first responders who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Looking to the future, Mr. Newman intends to elevate the Gas Workers Union Local 18007 to an unprecedented level of visibility and engagement, taking a leading role in various labor-focused initiatives.
