Leveraging more than four decades of excellence as an improvement advisor, Mr. Norman has earned distinction as a partner with the Associates in Process Improvement (API) since 1988. He is also a vice president of Profound Knowledge Partners Inc. Since 2001, he has focused his efforts on sharing his knowledge to help his partners understand the four streams of theory that he teaches, including systems, psychology, variation and knowledge. Notably, he and his team are working with Stanford Medical. Additionally, he is a valued member of the American Statistical Association, the American Psychological Association, and the Future of Nursing in Texas.
Outside of his primary career efforts, he has served as a founding member of SWQN since 1989. Along with these roles, he co-authored numerous works for his field, including "The Improvement Guide: A Practical Approach to Enhancing Organizational Performance" in 2009, "Transforming Health Care Leadership: A Systems Guide to Improve Patient Care, Decrease Costs, and Improve Population Health" in 2013 and "Patient Safety at a Glance: For Medical Students, Junior Doctors and Nurses" in 2014.
Before his present role, Mr. Norman began his career as a manager for Haliburton in 1979 and was the director of statistical methods for Phillip Crosby Associates in 1986. Following this time, he was a consultant for The Conrad Company in 1995 and for JDSU in 1999, taking a role as an outside consultant for Hallmark PRC as well in 1994. During this time, he also supported work and made contributions to the Deming Institute and with API supported Hewlett-Packard from 1997 until 2010, playing a key role in the success of the company's 88 waves of Black Belt professionals.
Mr. Norman also worked as an improvement advisor with IHI from 2001 until 2010 and was a level two certified instructor for Personal Strengths Publishing, Inc. from 2007 until 2010. Added to these roles, he was an improvement advisor for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement from 2001 until 2017 and an adjunct faculty member for the doctoral of nursing program at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center starting in 2010. Additionally, he was a member of the adjunct faculty for the Texas A&M University Medical School from 2016 until 2020. Among his professional accomplishments, he was awarded the Deming Medal from the American Society for Quality (ASQ) in 2023 in recognition of his dedication to learning and his ability to motivate, guide and mentor others in the application of their philosophy and ideas. He was also admitted as a senior fellow to the American Society of Equality and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Norman earned a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice and business administration from California State University, Los Angeles in 1975. Following this achievement, he attained a Master of Arts in behavioral sciences from California State University, Dominguez Hills in 2004. Eminently qualified in his field, he is also a certified quality engineer through ASQ. Within the coming years, Mr. Norman intends to continue his work and maintain his health, allowing him to spend more time with his children and eight grandchildren.
