Leveraging more than three decades of excellence as a servant leader, Mr. Alston has earned distinction as the director of human capital and development for the Department of Medical Assistance Services. Since 2021, he has focused his efforts on implementing cost-effective programs for risk management and improving diversity, equity and inclusion.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Alston served as a supervisory special agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration in Cyprus in 1996 until taking on the role of a deputy and associate administrator for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 2000. Notably, he helped to spearhead the Cultural Transformation initiative for the USDA, through which he and his team considered their employees, policies and programs with the goal of helping the department more closely resemble the citizens they serve.
During this time, Mr. Alston also worked as a senior policy advisor and military veterans' liaison for the Office of the Secretary of Agriculture in 2017, after which he served as the assistant director for employment, classification and compensation programs for Northern Virginia Community College in 2019. He continued his career as an operations manager for the human resources department of the Department of Medical Assistance Services in 2020.
Outside of his primary career endeavors, Mr. Alston is a valued member of the Senior Executives Association. Likewise dedicated to civil advocacy, he is a sponsor of the Mary Washington Hospital Foundation's Annual Cancer Walk.
To prepare for his career, Mr. Alston earned a Bachelor of Arts in social science from Michigan State University in 1985. In recognition of his stellar accomplishments, he was named a Distinguished Alumni by Michigan State University in 2019 and was admitted to the Michigan State Alumni Association. Well-qualified in his field, he is a certified project management professional and holds an executive leadership certificate from the Harvard Kennedy School. Within the coming years, Mr. Alston intends to transition his career to consulting work. He also hopes to do more for his local community, through which he aspires to help those who are less fortunate.
