Renowned for his expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing research, Dr. Wheeler is a clinical assistant professor and director in the data science department at the University of North Texas. In addition to teaching courses in data science, he directs the undergraduate program, ensuring that its curriculum reflects current trends in the industry.
Dr. Wheeler joined the University of North Texas in 2021 after a long and successful career in the field. Among his notable positions, he was a data scientist of the advanced analytical team at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Corporation in Fort Worth, Texas, performing advanced analytics on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, a product manager at Dell Computer in Round Rock, Texas, and a senior AI research scientist and data scientist at Wipro Limited in Plano, Texas. Earlier in his career, he was a senior systems engineer for Compaq Computer Corporation. Dr. Wheeler also achieved academic success as a senior professor of information systems at Keller Graduate School of Management International at DeVry University from 2002 to 2017 and held an appointment at LeTourneau University.
Dr. Wheeler was notably a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) field research astronaut who served as a mission commander of NASA/MDRS Crew 88 at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah in 2010. His research and that of his crew of aerospace scientists was reported to the Johnson Space Center in Houston and featured on the University of North Texas "Discovery Series" talk on YouTube in 2010.
Among other accomplishments, Dr. Wheeler developed a chess-playing program during his master's degree research that was artificially intelligent and had natural language processing features. The program was subsequently made into a movie, "Computer Chess," in 2013. Set in the 1980s, the film was written and directed by Andrew Bujalski and is the story of a man vs. machine chess tournament. As a seasoned researcher and scholar, Dr. Wheeler has published several academic papers regarding a new technology in the industry that includes alpha beta quiescence and quantum computing, as well as numerous other peer-reviewed articles.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Wheeler envisions remaining focused on research technology, data science, and quantum research and eventually emphasizing quantum computing research, which he believes will see a significant emergence in new technology. He also plans to form an AI company utilizing quantum computing and machine learning models and remain active as an educator.
Besides his academic commitments, Dr. Wheeler is a transport mission pilot with the Texas Wing Group III of the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary with the rank of captain. He also completed Squadron Leadership School and is the aerospace education officer of my squadron. Additionally, he is recognized as the president and chief executive officer of the Veteran War Birds of America, a nonprofit established to restore and preserve military aircraft.
Dr. Wheeler received a Bachelor of Science in computer science and mathematics in 1982 and a Master of Science in computer science and artificial intelligence in 1985 from Texas A&M University. Furthering his education, he garnered a Doctor of Philosophy in artificial intelligence from Walden University in Minneapolis in 1992. Dr. Wheeler received several designations in his industry, including machine learning through the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, machine learning implementation in business, Oracle data warehousing and data mining, and incident command systems ICS-300 and ICS-400, and has been trained in emergency services. Moreover, he is a Federal Aviation Administration licensed commercial pilot with an instrument rating.
Remaining aware of developments in his field, Dr. Wheeler is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, the International Neural Network Society, the Association for Systems Management, and the Dallas chapter of the Texas Astronomical Society. He has also been recognized as a distinguished senior member of the technical staff at Wipro, an Indian multinational corporation that provides information technology, consultant, and business process services.
Honored for his work, Dr. Wheeler received the Ron Taylor Award for Academic Excellence twice and the PRIDE Award from DeVry/Keller University. He also won the Chuck Yeager Aerospace Education Excellence Award and the National Commander's Commendation Award for Outstanding Duty Performance from the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary.
