Affiliated with Case Western Reserve University since 2019, he began as an adjunct professor and subsequently transitioned into a full research professor in the material sciences and engineering department one year later.
Dr. Yarus began his professional career in the late 1970s with Amoco Production Co. as an exploration and production geologist. From 1981 to 1986, he operated independently as a geologist and as the owner of Diversified Resources, Inc. In 1988, he joined Marathon Oil Company, spending over five years as a senior mathematical geologist. Dr. Yarus' career trajectory led him to various leadership roles in the late 1990s, including consultancy work at Yarus and Associates, serving as the vice president of consulting for Roxar, and taking on the part of manager of reservoir modeling at Geomath, Inc. From 2001 to 2006, he was the managing partner at Quantitative Geosciences LLP, until Halliburton Oilfield Services acquired the company. Dr. Yarus then served at Halliburton/Landmark for over a decade, initially as a senior earth and reservoir management manager and later as a technology fellow, reporting to the executive staff. During this time, he conceived and oversaw the development of a leading spatial modeling software suite. Additionally, Dr. Yarus was an adjunct faculty member at the University of Colorado Denver from 1983 to 1995 and at the University of Houston between 2000 and 2018 before being recruited by Case Western.
As he looks toward the future, Dr. Yarus plans to continue conducting research and teaching while gradually decreasing his professional activities to spend more time with his family and prepare for retirement. Nevertheless, he remains fervently passionate about his field, constantly seeking opportunities for growth and improvement within the industry and the academic community.
As a seasoned researcher who holds several U.S. patents for processes and devices related to geological modeling, Dr. Yarus has published numerous scholarly journal articles and scientific books, having notably edited three volumes on spatial modeling via the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Born and raised in Ohio, Dr. Yarus initiated his academic journey at the College of Wooster, earning a Bachelor of Arts in geology. He furthered his studies at the University of South Carolina, completing a Master of Science in geology in 1976 and a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematical geology in 1978. His academic credentials are bolstered by past certifications from the Texas Board of Professional Geologists and the American Association of Professional Geologists.
Dr. Yarus is active in his industry by maintaining memberships with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the American Institute for Professional Geologists, the Geological Society of America Inc., the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and, among others, the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. Highlighting his professional success, Dr. Yarus received the George Matheron Lecture Award from the International Association of Mathematical Geosciences in 2016. He attributes his success to his clarity, communication skills, and determination.
