With more than two decades of excellence in internal medicine, Dr. Iyer has earned distinction as the founding physician, president and director of clinical research for The Iyer Clinic (formerly known as the Nova Health Management and Research Group, PC). Since 1997, he has focused his efforts on translating basic and clinical research into effective community based primary care medicine in addition to conducting clinical trials and providing in-office patient consultations.
Additionally, Dr. Iyer has been a principal investigator and director of clinical research for the Iyer Clinic Research Center since 2010. He is also the founder and chief executive officer of ActivPower, Inc. and has authored "The Reaper's Dance: 1000 Days of COVID," which was published in 2023 and highlights the importance of human connection as a vital ingredient to the maintenance of a healthy community. Drawing on his experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, he is dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion as well as fostering connections to counteract what he calls "the poverty mindset" that fosters divisive worldviews in today's societies.
Among his professional accomplishments, Dr. Iyer's clinic has consistently received the "Top Doctor Award in Northern Virginia" each year since 2013. This award is based on patient satisfaction and peer nominations and is granted to approximately 800 out of 10,000 physicians in the region. He himself was also honored with a Young Investigator Award.
Prior to establishing his practice, Dr. Iyer served as the director of a hospice facility from 2004 until 2013 and as a vice-chairman of the department of medicine for Reston Hospital from 2008 until 2011. In 2012, he was promoted to a chairman for Reston Hospital's department of medicine, and subsequently assumed the role of the director of clinical research for Loudoun Medical Group, P.C. in 2022.
To prepare for his medical career, Dr. Iyer earned a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from Nalanda Medical College in India in 1983. He followed this by attaining a Doctor of Medicine postgraduate degree in biochemistry, protein peptide chemistry, and molecular immunology, with his thesis on immunity to leprosy and tuberculosis from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1988.
Dr. Iyer subsequently completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in medicine, oncology, cancer biology and molecular immunology at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center and at Harvard Medical School, both in 1991. He then was a postdoctoral research fellow in medicine, biochemistry and molecular biology with Children's Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Institute and a research fellow in medicine and molecular immunology with Harvard Medical School in 1993 and completed his residency in internal medicine at the George Washington University Medical Center in 1996.
Within the coming years, Dr. Iyer intends to continue his work on the frontlines of patient care, while continuing his advocacy for a mindset oriented towards an empowered life that seeks maximal expression of human potential. He is currently co-writing a book on neurodiversity and its significance within workforce dynamics.
