Since 1998, he has found much success as a senior research fellow for the Center for Electromechanics at The University of Texas and as a member of several senior national advisory boards. He is working to coordinate the technological needs of the United States Department of Defense with the research capabilities of a major research university. Prior to this role, Gen. Eickmann was active as the Commander of two of the largest miliary installations in the U.S. In that capacity, he led the Air Force's center of excellence for research, development and acquisition of aircraft, aeronautical equipment, and munitions.
Gen. Eickmann initially began his career serving in the United States Air Force as an engineer and a maintenance officer, who was responsible for properly maintaining aircraft, and ensuring that they were mission-ready and capable. Subsequently, he advanced to the role of Director of Maintenance of one of the largest military industrial complexes in the country followed by an assignment as the Commander of an Air Logistics Center. He later served as the Commander of the Aeronautical Systems Center and Installation Commander of Wright-Patterson AFB, one of the largest, most diverse, and organizationally complex military bases in the world with a long history of flight test spanning from the Wright Brothers to the Space Age. Post retirement from the military in 1998, Gen. Eickmann served as the director of the Construction Industry Institute at The University of Texas at Austin, where he led collaboration efforts with the engineering and construction owners, contractors, and academic professionals to improve one of the nation's largest industries.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Gen. Eickmann pursued an education at The University of Texas at Austin, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1967. He continued his academic efforts at the United States Air Force Institute of Technology, earning a Master of Science in Systems Engineering in 1968. Subsequently, he attained a Master of Science in National Security Management from the National Defense University's Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1983. He is also a graduate of the Air War College, the Executive Program at the University of Michigan School of Business Administration, and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. As a commitment to his field, he is licensed as a registered professional engineer and certified as an acquisition professional in acquisition logistics, program management and systems planning, research, development, and engineering. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, Gen. Eickmann has chaired several studies for the National Academy of Sciences and the National Research Council. He also served on the Air Force's Science and Technology Board and the Military Advisory Board for the Center for Naval Analysis which published several studies laying out the National Security Imperative to Reduce US Oil Dependence, the National Security Implications of Global Climate Change, and a review of the link between National Security & Assured Electrical Power.
Well-regarded for his contributions to the field, Gen. Eickmann is widely recognized as one of the nation's leading energy experts. He is also a highly respected leader and was presented the prestigious Order of the Sword by the enlisted men and women under his command.
