With more than a decade of excellence in counselor preparation and supervision as well as clinical mental health counseling, Dr. Harrichand has earned distinction as an assistant professor in the department of counseling for The University of Texas at San Antonio. Since 2021, he has focused his efforts on teaching classes for master's and doctoral students on professional counseling with an emphasis on navigating leadership and maintaining a successful career trajectory. He also conducts research on advocating for the counseling profession and clients, as well as studying minority populations, immigrant communities, refugee communities, LGBTQ+ communities, and sex trafficking survivors. Additionally, he is a valued member of the American Counseling Association, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development, along with other professional counseling organizations.
Also dedicated to civil advocacy, Dr. Harrichand serves as a board member for the Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling and has been a co-chair for the Ethical Values Committee since 2019. He recently served as chair and committee member for Chi Sigma Iota's Leadership and Professional Advocacy Committee (2020- 2023) - where he currently serves as Treasurer (2023-2025), and has previously served as co-chair of the American Counseling Association's Professional Standards Committee (2020-2022) and secretary of the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (2020-2021 ), among other professional organizations.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Harrichand worked as a supervisor for Compass Group Canada at the Toronto Zoo in 2007 and was promoted to a senior supervisor in 2013. He also served as a graduate teaching assistant for Liberty University from 2014 until 2018, becoming a chapter faculty co-advisor for the Nu chapter of Chi Sigma Iota at SUNY Brockport in 2018. He was promoted to an assistant professor of counselor education in 2018 and appointed as the mental health counseling coordinator in 2019.
Throughout his career, Dr. Harrichand has contributed numerous written works to his field, including "The Impact of Emotional Intelligence on Counselor Burnout" for the Virginia Counselors Journal, to "Leadership and Burnout: An Analysis of Counselor Educators in CACREP-Accredited Programs in the United States" in the Journal of Counselor Leadership and Advocacy and "Infusing Self-Care and Wellness into CACREP Curricula: Pedagogical Recommendations for Counselor Educators and Counselors During COVID-19" in the International Journal for the Advancement of Counselling in 2021, to "School Counselors and Refugee Students: Application of the Refugee Well-Being Project Intervention to Address the Social Determinants of Health" in the Professional School Counseling Journal in 2022. More recently, he wrote "Guyanese American Mental Wellness: A Qualitative Investigation Exploring Lived Experiences and Perceptions of Mental Health" in The Professional Counselor in 2023.
To prepare for his professional journey, Dr. Harrichand earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology and integrative biology from the University of Toronto at Scarborough in 2008. Following this achievement, he attamed a Master of Arts in Counselling from Providence Theological Seminary in Otterburne, Manitoba in 2011. He subsequently gained a Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision (CACREP-Accredited) from Liberty University in 2018, writing his dissertation on "The Relationship between Counselor Educators' Leadership Experience and Competence and Burnout."
Among his professional accomplishments, Dr. Harrichand was named an Outstanding Graduate Student Assistant by Liberty University in 2016 and received a 2016 VCA Leadership Academy Emerging Leader Award from the Virginia Counselors Association Foundation and the Virginia Counselors Association. He was also honored with an Outstanding Leadership Award in 2017 for his service to Liberty University's Rho Eta Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota. He was identified as an Association for Counselor Education and Supervision 2017 Emerging Leader and was named Lynchburg Area Counselors Association's 2017 Chapter Member of the Year. Added to these, he was presented with an Outstanding Advocacy Award from Chi Sigma Iota Rho Eta Chapter in 2018 and an Outstanding Article Award in 2021 for the Journal of Counselor Leadership and Advocacy. Additionally, he is grateful to have recently (2023) been awarded the Outstanding Pre-Tenured Faculty Award by the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision and the Professional Leadership Award by the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision for his stellar work in counseling and counselor education.
Well-qualified in his field, Dr. Harrichand holds certificates in teaching and learning in diverse classrooms and in diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace. He is also a national certified counselor, certified clinical mental health counselor, licensed professional counselor and licensed professional counselor supervisor, among other credentials.
Looking to the future, Dr. Harrichand is diligently working to earn tenure, and ultimately secure a role as a tenured associate professor and then a tenured full professor. His goal is to one day become a Fellow of the American Counseling Association - the highest honor in the counseling profession, which boasts a membership of approximately 55,000 individuals. Added to this, he aspires to establish a non-profit organization that provides support for marginalized communities and engage in international outreach to uplift and empower people in different countries.
