Leveraging more than a decade of excellence in university Student Center administration, Mrs. Dowell has earned distinction as the director of University Student Commons for Virginia Commonwealth University. Since 2022, she has focused her efforts on managing facilities, services and programs at two campuses and coordinating with staff to ensure proper facility operation and service delivery. She also develops strategic plans for her department and meets with various individuals on campus to enhance services and programs offered by student centers to best serve students' needs at VCU. Among her professional accomplishments, she is proud to have received the Revis A. Cox Memorial Award in 2013 and served as the Regional Director for Region 1 in 2014-2016 for the Association of College Unions International (ACUI).
Before her present role, Mrs. Dowell served as the Program Coordinator for training and major events with the University Student Union at California State University, Northridge in 2004, where she established a late-night program "Matador Nights" that has since become a longstanding tradition. Following this time, she was the Senior Program Coordinator for the Loker Student Union at California State University-Dominguez Hills in 2007, earning a promotion to the Manager of Marketing, Programs and Assessments in 2009. During her tenure, she was able to successfully rebrand the student union on campus, including renovating the decor of the student union and developing several key programs that were instrumental to the campus community.
Mrs. Dowell continued her career as the Associate Executive Director for Associated Students with San Jose State University in 2017 and was promoted to the Executive Director in 2018. While there, she was key to realigning organizational structure to maximize performance, efficiency, and development to better meet the needs of students.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Mrs. Dowell earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Marketing from California State University, Northridge in 2000. Following this achievement, she attained a Master of Public Administration from the same institution in 2007. She is also a valued member of the Association of College Unions International.
Within the coming years, Mrs. Dowell intends to enhance the level of services and programs offered at both Student Centers including a student feedback system to identify how to better serve Virginia Commonwealth University students. As part of this initiative, she hopes to prioritize the creation of a new Student Commons on the campus, with the ultimate goal of establishing a student union that can effectively cater to the needs of the current and future student body.
