With more than a decade of excellence in training, leadership and management, Dr. Lamar has earned distinction as the Assistant Fire Marshall with the City of Memphis Fire Department. Since 1998, he has focused his efforts on helping to improve safety for the citizens of Memphis. He was promoted from private to Fire Inspector in 2009, Training Officer in 2011, Battalion Chief in 2021, and now Assistant Fire Marshall in 2023. He currently supervises a group of 27 fire inspectors, 4 Battalion Chiefs, 2 Public Educators, 3 Assistant Public Educators, and 2 Clerical Staff making key decisions to improve the safety and quality for the City of Memphis. He is proud to have established a unified training program for Fire and Building Code Officials within the Shelby County area that has successfully spread throughout the West Tennessee region.
Outside of his primary career efforts, Dr. Lamar lent his expertise as a Public Speaker and Presenter at fire conferences, schools, and businesses around the city, and was a CPR instructor for the American Heart Association from 2008 until 2022, and an adjunct professor for Southwest Tennessee Community College from 2018 until 2022. Additionally, he has served as a faculty member with Bethel University since 2011, sharing his knowledge with rising professionals in his field and developing their fire science program.
Among his professional accomplishments, Dr. Lamar was honored as the Fire Prevention Employee of The Year by the City of Memphis Fire Department in 2015 and was admitted to the Golden Key International Honor Society in 2017. In 2019, he received an award from the Walden University National Society of Leadership and Success.
While developing his professional career, Dr. Lamar earned a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Management from Bethel College in 2008 and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Bethel University Tennessee in 2010. Following these achievements, he attained a Doctor of Philosophy in Management, with a concentration in Leadership and Organizational Change from Walden University in 2017. Eminently qualified in his field, he is a Certified Fire Inspector and certified in CPR and First Aid. He is also a certified Fire Instructor III with the Pro Board Accredited Certification (Pro Board), the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), and the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications.
