Her extensive background in education previously included a long and distinguished tenure as a music educator at Beloit Public Schools in Beloit, Wisconsin, from 1990 to 2011. She also taught as an adjunct professor at Concordia University in Wisconsin from 2002 to 2013 and the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater in 2014 and between 2017 and 2018.
Apart from her primary career endeavors, Ms. Gustina has presented sessions at numerous conferences, workshops, and universities, including the ISME in Beijing, the MKMEA in Milwaukee and Wichita, Kansas, and the CAKE in Chicago. She also contributed to the publication "Kaleidoscope" by Denese Odegaard, which features samples of model lessons aligned to the 2014 National Music Standards, and "Steps to Music Literacy", which comprises over 20 years of research and includes curriculum material to aid in teaching music literacy skills through vocal and instrumental experiences for children in grades Pre-K through grade 5.
Ms. Gustina has extended her services to support her community through commitments as a church choral director and with Youth for Christ International. She was the founder and director of the Junior Christian Singers.
Drawing inspiration from her mother, a music teacher who taught Ms. Gustina how to play the guitar and piano, the two later performed, along with her brothers, live folk music at various venues throughout the city and surrounding area. Choosing to follow in her mother's footsteps, Ms. Gustina prepared for her career by earning a Bachelor of Science in extended vocal music from the University of Wisconsin at LaCrosse in 1975. Years later, she returned to college, garnering a Master of Music Education with an emphasis in Kodály from Silver Lake College in 2002. Ms. Gustina also completed Suzuki piano instruction through the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point, Suzuki Association of the Americas, and participated in a course at the VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. Moreover, Ms. Gustina received instruction under Sr. Lorna Zemke and Kodály certification through Silver Lake College, Organization of American Kodály Educators.
Remaining active in her industry, Ms. Gustina is a member of the National Association for Music Educators. She is also a member, past vice president, and past president of the Association of the Wisconsin Area Kodály Educators, an affiliate of the Organization of American Kodály Educators.
