Dr. Lall attended Delhi University, a premier central university of India, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1989. Thereafter, he attended Brown University, where he earned a Master of Arts in 1990 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1995, both in economics. Following his education, Dr. Lall started at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, where he has built a robust career for nearly three decades.
In his first position at the International Monetary Fund, Dr. Lall worked as an economist from 1996 to 2003. The year after, he moved to the policy and development and review department, where he took on the role of senior economist. For the next four years, from 2004 to 2008, he continued to grow and apply his skill set and knowledge as the deputy division chief in the research department before climbing the ladder further to act as the division chief from 2008 to 2011 in the Asia and Pacific Department. Following Dr. Lall's time in said role, he became assistant director of first the Asia and Pacific department, from 2011 to 2012, then the European department from 2012 to 2017.
Following his time in those departments, Dr. Lall transferred to the Middle East and Central Asia department, where he has served as assistant director since 2017. He has since risen to the rank of deputy director, a position he has held since 2019. Over the span of his career, Dr. Lall has provided assistance and counsel that has mitigated financial crisis and supported nations across the globe. One of his most significant achievements was leading the International Monetary Fund's engagement with Portugal during the crisis in Europe from 2013 onward by assisting in the coordination and organization of the country's economic rescue plan.
From 2017 to 2019, Dr. Lall, a past member of the American Economic Association (AEA), also led the International Monetary Fund team during Egypt's stabilization program, which was a success. He attributes his accomplishments to his ability to translate concepts and theories into actionable policies and the opportunity to work with a talented and dedicated team of professionals.
Along with his financial expertise, Dr. Lall has devoted his time to the cause of global animal welfare. Over the course of the next five years, his objective is to continue to apply his experience in the areas of macroeconomics and financial markets. Furthermore, he aims to focus on the link between technological change and microeconomic performance in countries along with monetary policy and financial sector issues.
