A skilled professional in education and psychology, Dr. O'Brien has earned distinction as an assistant professor of psychology with Southeastern University. Having been an adjunct professor there since 2017, since 2022 she has focused her efforts on research regarding grieving with a particular interest in religious and cultural coping mechanisms. Additionally, she is a valued member of the American Psychological Association and the International Society of Political Psychology.
Before her present role, Dr. O'Brien began her career as a student worker in the higher education division for Chartwells in 2009. During this time, she was also a guest relations assistant for Southeastern University in 2010 and became a tutor for Club Z! In-Home Tutoring Services in 2013. She also served as a SES program assistant for the Learning Resource Center in 2012, becoming a computer teacher for the Osceola School District in 2013 and a bachelor-level therapist for TW Ponessa and Associates Counseling in 2014.
In 2015, Dr. O'Brien was a youth care worker and intern with Bethany Children's Home, an outpatient therapist for OMNI Health Services Inc. and a school-based outpatient therapist for T.W. Ponessa and Associates Counseling Services, Inc. She also served as a professional counseling intern for Empower the Mind LLC in 2015 and was a psychology instructor for the blueprint summer programs at Howard University in 2018. She subsequently was a psychology instructor for Remington College and school-based therapist for Meridian Behavioral Healthcare, Inc. in 2019, earning a promotion as a clinical-MRT for the latter company in 2020. That year, she also was a high school reading teacher for the Polk County School Board and a member of the psychology faculty for Valencia College in 2021.
Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. O'Brien received first place capstone award for experimental psychology from Southeastern University Professors in 2012 for her undergraduate degree. The same year, she was also honored with the Outstanding Major in Psychology award from Southeastern University upon graduation. She has also been inducted to the Psi Chi International Honor Society.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. O'Brien earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Southeastern University in 2012. Following this achievement, she attained a master's degree in professional counseling from Liberty University in 2015. She subsequently gained a Doctor of Philosophy in general psychology with an emphasis on cognition and instruction from Grand Canyon University in 2021.
