A leader in academia for three decades, Dr. Ryan retired from Midlands Technical College in 2012 as the Title III grant coordinator after five years in her role. Today, she remains affiliated with the Health Physics Journal, a refereed publication for radiation protection specialists, as the managing editor, a position she has held since 2011. Leveraging her former expertise, she provides insight to ensure the integrity of the journal. Notably, Dr. Ryan's late husband, Dr. Michael T. Ryan, was the editor-in-chief before she was named to her position.
Dr. Ryan began her career in academic administration at Aiken Technical College in Aiken, South Carolina, in 1983 as the dean of arts and sciences. She was subsequently hired by Charleston Southern University in 1996 as the dean of student success, a role she upheld for 10 years before becoming an adjunct professor in the CSU Online program. During her tenure with Charleston Southern University, Dr. Ryan was instrumental in helping the institution become an electronic campus and becoming recognized at the forefront of distance education.
Aside from her work at Health Physics, Dr. Ryan is a director-at-large for the Alumni Board at her alma mater, Emmanuel College, Boston, since 2023.
Highly educated, Dr. Ryan garnered a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish language teacher education from Emmanuel College in 1975, followed by a Master of Higher Education and a Doctor of Education in curriculum and instruction from the University of South Carolina in 1989 and 1994, respectively. She also received certification as a professional secretary through the International Association of Administrative Professionals in 1986.
In light of her accomplishments, Dr. Ryan has received numerous Staff Member of the Year Awards, and Administrator of the Year Award, and the University of Texas at Austin's NISOD (National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development) Excellence Award. Attributing her good fortune to her work ethic, Dr. Ryan worked diligently, beginning at the bottom and earning progressive roles along the way.
