Throughout his career, Dr. Gilbert has taught students and conducted research at a plethora of national and international institutions, including Valley High School, where he served as head of the Science Department, the Marine Science Institute at University of California, Santa Barbara, the General Research Corporation in their Advanced Technology: Special Projects Division, the Akela Corporation in their Special Projects Division, the American International School of Johannesburg, South Africa, the Los Angeles Unified School District, and the Catalina Island Marine Institute. An expert in his field, Dr. Gilbert earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1981 and 1990, respectively, before completing postgraduate coursework at his alma mater and receiving a PhD from the University of Southern California.
Driven to remain abreast of ongoing industry changes, Dr. Gilbert is affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Educational Research Association, the American Historical Society, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the U.S. Navy, and the Comparative & International Education Society, although this does not represent the full breadth of his affiliations. As a devoted philanthropist, Dr. Gilbert contributes through his affiliations with the American National Red Cross, the International Red Cross Geneva Conventions, and rural development, health delivery and education projects in Vietnam, Cambodia and Lao People's Democratic Republic.
Due to his vast breadth of knowledge, Dr. Gilbert has authored or contributed to numerous publications, including Culturalization and Research in Developing Countries, which was presented at the American Clinical Research Professionals meeting in 2012, "Role of Community-Based Integrated Sustainable Development," "Role of Research in Applied Economics," "Clinical Research Ethics," "International Cooperation and Development," "Intelligence: Value-Added Information CIES," "New Trends in Mathematics Development and Assessment," "Value of Education and Experience." He has also been invited to review "Research Methodology and Statistical Analysis" for Sage Publications and consulted on human resource and technology development projects in the United States and in more than 40 countries.
In light of his professional accomplishments, Dr. Gilbert has been honored with grants from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA, and other national and international organizations. Named one of the 2,000 outstanding people of the 20th Century in Science and Education and a member of the Order of International Ambassadors, he has been recognized numerous times over the breadth of his career, earning the Outstanding Teacher of Advanced Biological Sciences and the Outstanding Mentor of Published and Presented Research Award through the National Science Foundation, the Faculty Excellence Award and the Outstanding Research Award through the University of Phoenix, the World Medal of Freedom, an honorary Board of Educators Award through The National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists, a Distinguished Science Service Award for Molecular Biophysics Symbiosis in Cambridge, England., a California Science Fellow, the American Medal of Honor, a Robotics Education Grantee with NASA and an Eisenhower Fellow in Research through the National Science Foundation. He has also been named a Son of the United States of America by the Historical Preservations of America and since 2018, he has been one of seven National Science Advisory board members for the United States. Dr. Gilbert also serves on the Advisory Boards of Rover Robotics, Atma Global, and QualityMD.
