Growing up in Ghana, West Africa, in a family of Black American and Ghanaian heritage, Dr. Quartey developed a passion for writing and a desire to practice medicine at an early age—two dreams he pursued wholeheartedly and saw to fruition. Despite plans to complete medical school in Ghana, he moved with his mother back to the United States following the passing of his father. He gained admission to Howard University College of Medicine, which he cites as his most noteworthy achievement. Such a turning point allowed him to prove his abilities and pursue a career in medicine and paved the way for his success as a physician. After graduating with a Doctor of Medicine, Dr. Quartey completed his residency in internal medicine and went on to practice as a board-certified physician in internal medicine for two decades. As a result of his degree and practice, he holds memberships with the American Medical Association and the American Board of Wound Medicine and Surgery. Dr. Quartey succeeded in following his educational trajectory to become a doctor, but he never lost sight of his passion for writing and followed that passion, even while practicing medicine.
From handwriting and typing adventure and mystery stories inspired by Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as a young child to honing his craft by completing an extension course in creative writing through the University of California Los Angeles, Dr. Quartey continued to write and balanced his two professional pursuits. Eventually, all his hard work paid off, and he published his first novel, Wife of the Gods, the start of the Darko Dawson series, which made the Los Angeles Times Bestseller List in 2009. Since his first publication, Dr. Quartey has authored ten more crime novels in his two crime series and one standalone novella, Death At The Voyager Hotel.
In 2020, Dr. Quartey debuted a second series, the Emma Djan series, featuring a female Ghanaian private investigator, a rarity in the genre. He continues to integrate his home country into his work to share with the world. Such achievements in both the field of medicine and writing can be attributed to his unwavering determination and focus on achieving his goals—qualities that have been pivotal in his journey from his early years to the present day. In 2018, after two decades of practicing medicine and writing five books simultaneously, he retired as a physician to devote himself entirely to writing and publishing, including his next title, The Whitewashed Tombs, the fourth Emma Djan novel in the series.
Looking ahead, Dr. Quartey strongly desires to expand his readership and grow his audience in the future. As he continues to create, he is determined to ensure that his work reaches its full potential; his mission is to not only share his stories with more individuals but to showcase West Africa as a hub for crime fiction and put the region on the map.
