LORTON, VA, November 29, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Shilpa N. Gowda with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Gowda celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Gowda is an occupational medicine physician who joined the U.S. Department of Defense in Washington, D.C., in 2022. A career that focuses on the health impact that physical, chemical, biological, social, and psychosocial elements have on people, her role also includes integrating health promotion and disease prevention, diagnosis, care, and more. As part of her daily responsibilities, Dr. Gowda evaluates individuals via comprehensive physical exams seeking employment as firefighters, police officers, and veterans to determine if they can perform their duties fully. She also treats various illnesses and injuries, assists with vaccinations and immunizations, and, among other obligations, monitors those who work with hazardous drugs and police officers required to remain in good physical shape.

Before working for the government, Dr. Gowda was a medical consultant for the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and the director of occupational employee health at Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System in New Orleans. She was also an attending physician at General Medical Center in Maine. During that time, she co-founded and co-directed the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Spirometry Training Program. Among other noteworthy positions, Dr. Gowda was a medical officer at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in Cincinnati, involved with the Health Hazards Evaluation Program.

In addition to her work in the field, Dr. Gowda was an adjunct professor at Tulane University. She also had the opportunity to work on several projects, including the Boeing Firefighter Occupational Health Exam Program through the department of medicine at the University of Washington, reviewing state guidelines, conducting reports, and making recommendations for new firefighter hires. Moreover, Dr. Gowda has contributed scholarly articles to various professional publications, such as Environmental Epidemiology.

Active civically, Dr. Gowda has served on various committees, boards, and task forces for multiple organizations. She is affiliated with the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine as a media representative for the environmental health section and a task force member of its anti-racism workgroup since 2022. Additionally, Dr. Gowda has served on the organization's American occupational health conference planning committee since 2021.

Inspired by her mother, an internist in the U.S. Department of Defense for 20 years, Dr. Gowda frequently visited her at work while coming of age. Initially drawn to molecular biology and other sciences, she ultimately chose medicine because it had a more humanitarian component, which she preferred. Additionally, she decided to narrow in on occupational medicine.

Dr. Gowda received a Bachelor of Science in neuroscience and a Doctor of Medicine from Brown University in 2008 and 2012, respectively, and a Master of Public Health in environmental and occupational health sciences from the University of Washington in 2016. She also had the opportunity to spend a year as a visiting undergraduate student at Harvard University from 2006 to 2007. Dr. Gowda secured numerous designations in her field and has maintained a medical license through the American Board of Preventive Medicine since 2017.

Active in her professional community, Dr. Gowda is a member of the International Commission on Occupational Health and is an elected fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Additionally, she has been active with the American Occupational Health Conference on the planning committee and the board of directors of the college of occupational environmental medicine's New England chapter.

While in college, Dr. Gowda received several accolades, including Outstanding Master's Student of the Year from the University of Washington in 2016. The university also nominated her for the Gilbert S. Omenn Award. Among other recognitions, Dr. Gowda received an Excellence in the Arts and Humanities from the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County and a Book Award from Mount Holyoke College.
