With more than three decades of excellence in military service, social services, community service, and in the field of business. Ms. Shannon has earned distinction as the founder and chief executive officer of Michigan Women Veterans Empowerment. Since 2015, she has focused her efforts on advocating for veterans, giving speaking engagements on her experiences in the military, and bringing awareness to the post-traumatic stress disorder condition and sexual trauma and challenges she faced during and after her service. Additionally, she has served as an author, speaker, and veteran advocate with Jay Enterprise, LLC since 2013. Through this role, she authored her Amazon best-selling book "Battling the Storm Within" in 2014 and authored her first volume of "Our Voices United: USA Women Veterans Break Silence" in 2016 which included nine other women veteran authors.
Before starting her organization, Ms. Shannon served honorably as a sergeant and non-commissioned officer E-5 for the United States Army and United States Army Reserves from 1989 until retiring in 1998 with an honorable discharge. Her military service includes the 1990-1991 Desert Storm - Desert Shield Persian Gulf War. She earned the National Defense Service Medal - Southwest Asia Service Medal - Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal and 425th Transportation Brigade Combat Patch.
Following her military service, she worked in the field of social services, as a substitute teacher, instructor, educator, mentor, consultant, event planner, and trainer for business operations from 1999 until 2008. During this time, she was also a social services specialist for the State of Michigan Department of Human Services from 2003 until 2008 and the founder and chief executive officer of Stepeze Inc., a youth development organization from 1999 until 2009.
While developing her professional journey, Ms. Shannon earned an associate's degree in fashion merchandising and business from Grand Rapids Community College in 1989. Following this achievement, she attained a bachelor's degree in psychology from Grand Valley State University in 1996. She was nominated and chosen of out 242 trailblazing women who serve in their communities in the State of Michigan to be honored as an MLive Women Who Shape the State Awardee in 2023 as well. She has been licensed and ordained as a Pastor in the Christian faith since 2007 and leads the Battling the Storm Within Ministries empowering others through faith to be healed, delivered, and set free from any bondages or barriers that are hindering them from living full and productive lives.
