Dr. Olsen is an expert in theology and health humanities who has been a faculty member at the University of Scranton in Scranton, Pennsylvania, since 2006. Joining the institution in 2006 as a lecturer, he became an assistant and associate professor. Dr. Olsen also served as the director of the Master of Theological Studies program from 2009 to 2010, as the Director of General Education Assessment between 2015 and 2018, and as the co-director of the Health Humanities initiative.
As a faculty member in the department of theology and religious studies, Dr. Olsen is primarily responsible for teaching various interdisciplinary courses, maintaining research excellence, and offering service to the common good. His research is increasingly focused on global public health, policy, and public engagement with ideas at the intersection of science and religion. Dr. Olsen served as the co-editor of Hermeneutics of Tradition and is developing a research agenda in African ethnographic fieldwork for health-related social-science innovations. The fieldwork is a consequence of his Affiliate Research Fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Together with the Dhand Lab and The Human Network Initiative, he is part of a team funded by the Templeton World Charity Foundation to conduct collaborative research in Uganda on brain health and biopsychosocial factors impacting health-seeking behavior.
He provides consulting services for thought leadership and voiceover talent as the owner-operator of Tuned to Cyrus LLC since 2022. He has been a member of the Oxford Entrepreneurs Network since 2015 and continues developing his cross-sector education through such credentials as ValueSelling Framework for Marketing Professionals and is certified in human subjects' research. To remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. Olsen is a member of the African Studies Association and the American Academy of Religion. Additionally, he participated in the United Nations (UN) Science Summit for the first time in conjunction with the UN General Assembly in 2023.
In a volunteer capacity, Dr. Olsen has offered science-religion lectures at a local High School, served as a swimming competition judge for the YMCA, coached little league, and assisted the Biden-Harris campaign in northeast PA. Presently, many of his service hours are dedicated to the non-profit organization AI and Faith, as well as continued support for communities in Uganda seeking assistance in coffee farming, education, and scientific research.
Highly educated, Dr. Olsen received a bachelor's degree in comparative history of ideas from the University of Washington (Seattle, WA) in 2000, with a year abroad in Aberdeen, followed by a Master of Philosophy in theology and a Doctor of Philosophy in theology from the University of Oxford in 2003 and 2008, respectively. Furthermore, Dr. Olsen received credentials in the ValueSelling Framework for Marketing Professionals and is certified in human subjects' research.
