Mr. Gilliland currently holds the position as owner and Editor-in Chief at Southern Arizona Press, where he has been serving since February 2022. Prior to his current role, Mr. Gilliland had an illustrious career spanning three decades with the United States Army. His last role in the Army was as a Senior instructor of Counterintelligence at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, where he imparted his vast knowledge and experience to budding intelligence special agents.
Before becoming an instructor, Mr. Gilliland served as an Operational Management Team lead and Platoon Sergeant for several years, during which time he honed his leadership skills and contributed significantly to strategic planning and Operations Management. He initially joined the United States Army as a clerk typist and served as a pianist, percussionist, and staff arranger for an Army band. He later served as the Administrative Non-commissioned Officer in Charge of the Administrative Section for the Army Element at the Armed Forces School of Music in Norfolk, Virginia and then for Region I, 650th Military Intelligence Group in Naples, Italy. During his assignment with the 650th Military Intelligence Group, he displayed exceptional analytical skills and dedication to national security and was selected for reclassification to the Army Counterintelligence Corps.
Mr. Gilliland's academic achievements have played a significant role in shaping his successful career path. He holds Associate of Applied Science Degrees in Intelligence Studies, Linguistics, and Education from Cochise College; a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Theory/Composition and Technical Theater Design from Olivet College; and a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Music Composition from the Vermont College of Fine Arts all of which have greatly influenced his creative approach toward his profession. The remarkable achievements of Mr. Gilliland can be largely ascribed to the wealth of experience he has accumulated over the years, coupled with his vast knowledge in his field of expertise.
Mr. Gilliland's entry into publishing was sparked by his understanding of Amazon's Kindle Direct publishing program, which led him to self-publish his own book in early 2021. The experience ignited a passion for writing, and he soon found himself deeply involved in poetry groups and published his second book of poetry at the beginning of 2022. When an opportunity arose to compile poetic anthologies, Mr. Gilliland seized it and established Southern Arizona Press with the mission to promote the works of self-published and lesser-known unpublished authors and poets to the rest of the world. Originally established to publish poetic anthologies, Southern Arizona Press now serves as a platform for emerging poets and authors to submit their work for publication, further cementing Mr. Gilliland's commitment to nurturing talent in the literary field.
