Two years later, he was promoted to senior signal processing research engineer II, responsible for developing new algorithms that enhance the sound quality and intelligibility of hearing aids. Dr. Sunohara's primary focus includes streamlining the hearing aid processes and improving their functionality. He is also concentrating on making these devices less visible but with the same level of clarity as before.

Before joining Starkey Hearing, Dr. Sunohara spent two decades at Rion Company Ltd. in Tokyo. Hired in 2000 as an engineer in the company's equipment diagnosis development department, he subsequently worked in various other business areas, including the hearing aid development department and the technology development department. In 2010, Dr. Sunohara was named as an assistant engineering manager of research and development within the business technology development department. Eight years later, he became a technical lead and assistant engineering manager for Rion's R&D Center. From 2019 to 2020, Dr. Sunohara served as an engineering manager. During that time, he led several research projects, including the Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids wireless streaming implementation, the blind source separation-based speech enhancement system, and the deep neural network-based speech enhancement system.
Highly educated, Dr. Sunohara holds a Master of Science in electrical and electronic engineering and a Doctor of Engineering in acoustic engineering from Shinshu University in Japan since 2000 and 2006, respectively. He speaks Japanese and English.
