Mrs. Cohen-Umana was drawn to be a restaurateur by her grandparents, Jean-Luc and Lucette Sonigo, who migrated to the United States from France and raised five children while building La Baraka from the ground up. To this day, Mrs. Cohen-Umana attributes much of her professional success to her grandmother, a warm and personable woman who made customers feel welcome and created a homelike atmosphere that was key to the restaurant's success. Now that Mrs. Cohen-Umana has assumed ownership of La Baraka, she strives to continue her grandparents' legacy and keep their little slice of Paris alive in their corner of Queens, New York.
Looking toward the future, Mrs. Cohen-Umana strives to expand her business while showcasing the local culture; the Little Neck community has undergone rapid transformation in recent years, with many new families moving to the area, and she looks forward to showing newcomers that they don't need to travel to Manhattan for a high-quality French dining experience.
