Ms. Westermann's career journey began as a behavioral therapist in Community Mental Health from 2008 to 2009. She then progressed to roles as a mental health counselor at Therapeutic Mental Health Counseling PLLC from 2021 to 2022 and Choosing Change Counseling Service from 2022 to 2023 before attaining licensure in August 2023. In September 2023, she began her own practice, naming it Different Directions LMHC. An expert in home-based care, mental health counseling, public speaking and skill development, Ms. Westermann has been recognized for her expertise with inductions into Psi Chi and listings in various professional organizations.
Complementing her professional experience is Ms. Westermann's solid educational foundation, which includes Ph.D. coursework at the University at Albany, SUNY; a Master's Degree in Community Mental Health Counseling from The College of Saint Rose, conferred in 2007; and a B. A. in Psychology from Christopher Newport University in 1997. She credits her success to the inspiration from her grandmother and great-grandmother, as well as the unwavering support of her husband.
Outside of her counseling practice, Ms. Westermann is preparing to volunteer with local organizations to raise mental health awareness and need for services in her community. Her personal life is enriched by her spouse, J.R. "Budd" Westermann, since October 31, 2008, and their six children, whose ages range from 28 to 13. Ms. Westermann enjoys reading, quilting, spending time with family and home education in her free time.
Looking ahead, Ms. Westermann plans to grow Different Directions Counseling LMHC into a larger practice that offers employment opportunities for clinicians who share her vision of service access and community partnership. Her goal includes establishing a physical location that provides regulatory oversight and expands service access for those in need within her rural New York community. She also aims to foster employee wellness and team-building through collaborative efforts with local organizations.
