After earning his college degrees, Mr. Copley began his career in the corporate sector in 1964 as a commercial illustrator for several respected advertising agencies, including Bayer & Company in Columbus as a layout artist and Shaw Barton Advertising Company in Coshocton, Ohio, as an illustrator. He also spent years as an art director for Varsity House Inc., Rhino Graphics Inc., and Repo-Graphics, Inc. in Columbus, and as an art director and illustrator for BAD Magazine Inc. in Chandler, Arizona, until 1982. Throughout his professional career, Mr. Copley continued to pursue his artistry, restoring paintings that originated on canvas, wood panels, and copper plates.
Excelling in his niche area, Mr. Copley has been restoring art for more than five decades. Self-taught, he produces artwork for various diverse exhibitions. During his career, he was also honored to be selected to set up and paint a copy of "Mrs. Thomas Gage" by John Singleton Copley, Mr. Copley's great-great-great-grandfather, at the Timken Museum of Art in San Diego in 2010. Mr. Copley has also notably collaborated with Michael Terry, the artisan behind Kevin Costner's Oscar-winning film, "Dances with Wolves." One of their most recognizable collaborations included the Hiawatha Series. Among other accomplishments, he has been a featured artist in numerous permanent collections and six distinct museums, such as the Museo Cusarare and Loyola Museum in Chihuahua, Mexico, the Museum of Western Art in Kerrville, Texas, and the James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art in St. Petersburg, Florida. Mr. Copley looks forward to participating in the 2025 showcase at the Museum of Western Art in Kerrville, Texas, and the 17th Annual International Guild of Realism in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Besides his many showcases and gallery exhibitions, Mr. Copley has lectured at museums and other art organizations and produced numerous videos. Additionally, he has authored books and articles on traditional methods and techniques in painting, including "Traditional Studio Practice - How to Paint on a Copper Plate - Traditional Painting Methods Using Putrido."
Highly educated in his field, Mr. Copley attained a Bachelor of Art from the Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio, in 1962, followed by a Bachelor of Fine Art from Famous Artists School in Wilton, Connecticut in 1966. He also honorably served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1962 to 1964.
Remaining aware of developments in his industry, Mr. Copley is a member of the International Guild of Realism, the Portrait Artists of Arizona, the American Society of Classical Realism, the, Art Renewal Center and among others, the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works.
In light of his decades of work, Mr. Copley has garnered a multitude of awards and recognitions, including Second Place at the 10th Annual Exhibition and Sale from the Portrait Artist of Arizona in 2020 and a Best of Show from the American Art Collector Magazine and a Director's Award from the International Guild of Realism in 2018. Earlier in his career, he received a Best Figurative Award at the Seventh Annual Exhibition and Sale from the International Guild of Realism Exhibition and Sale in 2011, a Bronze Award for Best Oil and Drawing from the Museum of Western Art Exhibition and Sale in 2009, and several other Silver and Gold Awards for his work.
