His proven leadership in New York City and nationally across diverse platforms has been foundational in Dr. Manning's professional advancement. At the start of his career, he became a Coordinator/Therapist within Jersey City Medical Center Hospital for Children and, in 1981, he moved to the position of Coordinator with the Guidance Center New Rochelle to be closer to his residence. The Mid-Brooklyn Health Association welcomed Dr. Manning as a consultant in 1983, and he concurrently served as a Supervisor with Family Dynamics, leaving both positions in 1984 to accept the role of Clinical Director at Bedford-Stuyvesant Community Mental Health Center. There, Dr. Manning remained dedicated to supervising several therapists and improving the quality of care to patients through 1986.
From 1986 to 1992, Dr. Manning accumulated additional knowledge as a Project Manager for the New York State Office of Mental Health, while also having private practice beginning in 1987. From 1991 to 1993 he was appointed as the Director of Human Services at The Door and following this, he transitioned to the state of Maryland to serve as a Senior Consultant with the Laurel Consulting Group. Dr. Manning also relished a series of consultancy positions with distinct organizations including the Glass Substance Abuse Service in 1995, Baltimore Child Care Resource Center in 1996 and the DC Department of Mental Health from 2004 to 2006. Additionally, he excelled as the Clinical Director for Community Counseling and Mentoring Services between 2010 and 2011.
Dr. Manning has earned impressive academic credentials that include a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education from Rowan University (formerly Glassboro State College). On a full scholarship, he also pursued a Master of Social Work from the State University of New York, Stony Brook before advancing to secure a Postgraduate Diploma at Hunter College. Finally, Dr. Manning earned a terminal degree in his field by completing a PhD from New York University in 1997, where he was a proud enrollee in the inaugural doctoral class in the School of Social Work.
Distinguished industry credentials further define Dr. Manning's professional profile. In addition to becoming a Certified Clinical Social Worker, he has also been named as a Diplomate of the Academy of Certified Social Workers. In 2011, he completed a robust coaching certification offered by the prestigious College of Executive Coaching and later completed another certification from the Lifeforming Leadership Coaching Program.
Dr. Manning has also shown dedication to mentoring others through a commitment to higher education. In 1985, he joined the adjunct faculty at the New York University School of Social Work and served for two years. While teaching at the Catholic University School of Social Work as a lecturer in 1997, he was also hired as an Assistant Professor at Howard University from 1996 through 2004. There, he humbly supported and nurtured numerous young individuals. Dr. Manning has also taught at the rank of Instructor in the Continuing Education Program and, as faculty at the University of Maryland School of Social Work.
Dr. Manning remains dedicated to civic and volunteer service through his position as a Minister at The Shepherds House International Christian Church, where he has served since 2018. He is also the founder of Destiny in Action, a nonprofit organization launched in 2022 which he ambitiously aims to expand over the next five years. Dr. Manning will maintain a focus on building strong families by utilizing the System of Care model that seeks to access services that include case management, counseling, and advocacy to advance family stability by empowering family member to make meaningful contributions to society.
Spearheading the first-ever System of Care project in Brooklyn presently stands as a noteworthy accomplishment of Dr. Manning's career thus far. The protocols he assisted in establishing formed a single-entry point of care for youth in the borough, which at the time was the only community without a dedicated children's hospital. Dr. Manning remains gratified to have made such a meaningful impact on the healthcare system in that region.
Various memberships enable Dr. Manning to maintain a critical network of colleagues and partnerships. One of which being a governor-appointed position to the New York Assembly Committee on Children and Families, and the Maryland Board of Social Work. He has also partnered with the Minority Initiative Resource Committee of the National Institute of Mental Health and was a past member of the New York State Commission on Child Support. Notably, Dr. Manning has contributed significantly to the existing scholarly literature across the continuum of cultural competence, community development and leadership by publishing in professional journals dedicated to his areas of expertise. Selected titles include; "Implementing A Generalist Model of Practice" from 2009, "Empowering African Americans Through Social Work Practice: Integrating an Afrocentric Perspective, Ego Psychology, and Spirituality" from 2004, and "Destiny's Purpose: God's Signature Plan for Your Life" in 2011.
Dr. Manning is a devout believer who places his faith at the core of all personal, family and professional pursuits.
