Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Mr. Hawkins aligns himself with the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the Harvard Kennedy School Alumni Association. In conjunction with his work, he oversees the Harvard University Alumni of South Africa and serves as an admissions interviewer for Duke University. He has also volunteered as a poll official and electric judge in three state elections in his community.
In light of his professional achievements, Mr. Hawkins was awarded for participating in the U.S.-South African Binational Commission's Conservation, Environment, and Water Committee. While his career has been filled with highlights, he is most proud of his work during his tenure with the U.S. Embassy in South Africa. He was pivotal in executing projects that utilized U.S. technological expertise in partnership with the South African government. Other standout moments include liaising with the then Vice President Al Gore and former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela.
