SAINT PETERSBURG, FL, December 14, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Bryan T. Shuler has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Teaching academia for more than 30 years, Mr. Shuler joined Hillsborough Community College in 2016 as a professor of humanities and cultural studies, specializing in Western humanities, African humanities, Latin American humanities, and Asian humanities. Instructing six to eight undergraduate courses per semester, he also serves as Curator for the Dr. Anthony L. Griffon Research Library and Learning Lab. Moreover, Mr. Shuler serves on various committees, presents on multiple humanities topics at national conferences, and is the Community College/Minority Serving Institution Education Advisor for the Digital Archive Fellowship for ACOR, in Amman, Jordan.
Besides his teaching commitments, Mr. Shuler has been engaged in research initiatives with a current focus on the society and culture of the Middle East and Africa, including participation at an archaeological site in Amman, Jordan. Looking toward the future, he aspires to advance his research in West African, Middle Eastern, and North African studies.
Before joining Hillsborough Community College full-time, Mr. Shuler taught at various institutions between 1991 and 2016. He also served as an Associate Professor at the University of South Florida from 1997 to 2013 and as an adjunct professor at Saint Petersburg College between 1997 and 2015.
Among other professional accomplishments, Mr. Shuler is a professional ballet accompanist, and was the founding member of the renowned Dagari Jazz Trio. He also received a Fulbright research fellowship as a composer-in-residence to the Ghana National Dance Company under Nii Yartey, through which his composition, "Hands of Steel, Souls of Stone" was performed for an international audience at the gala opening of the National Theatre of Ghana. Mr. Shuler's musical expertise has also led to him accompanying and composing for ballet companies worldwide, including the Star Dancer Ballet Company in Tokyo, Ghana National Dance Company, New York City Ballet, Bay Ballet Theatre, Tampa Ballet, Tallahassee Ballet, and lent his expertise to such institutions as Florida State University, and the University of South Florida Dance Department as Director of Music.
Active civically, Mr. Shuler serves as a board member for the Mid-Florida chapter of the Fulbright Association. He is also involved as a member of his Masonic Lodge, twice serving as Grand Musician for the Grand Lodge of Florida, and has been engaged in numerous church activities.
Highly educated, Mr. Shuler graduated from the University of Tampa with an undergraduate degree in piano performance and music theory with a minor in dance. He subsequently received both a Master of Liberal Arts, and a Master of Music in electronic composition from the University of South Florida, as well as a Master of Music in ethnomusicology, and his Doctoral work in Humanities and Anthropology from The Florida State University. His post-graduate study on the West African Bagre Myth was under the tutelage of Sir Jack Goody, FBA, a renowned British anthropologist from St. John's College at Cambridge University, England. In addition to his degrees, he holds four certificates from Rare Book School, University of Virginia. During his college years, Mr. Shuler was inducted into several honor societies.
As a professional in his industry, Mr. Shuler remains active as the Community College/Minority Serving Institution Education Advisor for the Digital Archive Fellowship for ACOR, in Amman, Jordan, which notably operates within the Council of American Overseas Research Centers umbrella. Mr. Shuler is a Fellow of The Explorers Club, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and is also affiliated with the Society for Ethnomusicology, the American Anthropological Association, and the Washington Map Society.
