Dr. Sorger is an engineer, innovator, thought leader, and electrophysics microelectronics expert celebrating more than 15 years of innovation and advocacy in the semiconductor industry and related technologies. Inspired to pursue a career in engineering by his desire to make a difference in the world, Dr. Sorger completed a Master of Arts in physics with a focus in flash memory devices at the University of Texas at Austin in 2005. He began his career in 2006 as an intern in the Novel Device group for Intel, after which he began the European Space Agency's astronaut candidate selection process. Passing six of the seven qualification stages, he became one of the top 22 candidates in an initial pool of about 10,000 applicants.
Dr. Sorger was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in opto-electronics, energy efficiency, and materials research by the University of California Berkeley in 2011, and spent the following year as a postdoctoral researcher at the school's National Science Foundation Nanoscience & Engineering Center. In 2012, Dr. Sorger joined the faculty at The George Washington University as an assistant professor, rising to tenured associate in 2017. He was named director of the university's Institute for Photonics & Artificial Intelligence in 2021, and made a full professor in The George Washington University School of Engineering and Applied Science in 2022. During this time, Dr. Sorger continued being a community builder, innovator, and entrepreneur, serving as the division chair for Optoelectronics & Photonics at the Optica Society, and being a member of the boards for both the Optical Society and the International Society for Optics and Photonics He further co-founded software solutions venture BitGrid, as well as Optelligence Company, a photonics startup focusing on innovations in machine learning and data analytics. He was the editor-in-chief for the journal Nanophotonics after Dr. Federico Capasso, and serves on several international publishing journals including Applied Physics Reviews, Optica, Nanophotonics, eLights, and Chips.
Since 2023, Dr. Sorger has been the director of the Florida Semiconductor Institute and the school's Rhine Endowed Professor of Semiconductor Photonics. As director of the Florida Semiconductor Institute, Dr. Sorger is responsible for overseeing research and development, education initiatives, and public-private partnerships that lay the groundwork for future semiconductor industry innovations and a revival of American semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem, with the goal of doubling Florida's semiconductor workforce in the coming years. As one of the leading voices in his specialty, Dr. Sorger holds more than 20 licensed patents, has published extensively, and is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Optical Society (Optica, former OSA), the International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM), International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE), and German National Academic Foundation. He has been the recipient of many of his industry's top accolades, most recently the 2023 Maria Goeppert-Mayer Award, the 2019 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the annual publication award from the National Academy of Sciences and has gained global recognition for his work on a photonic chip for artificial intelligence applications.
Dr. Sorger credits his success to his excitement for developing new technologies and to his lifelong learning ethos, and advises others to take risks, embrace creative solutions, and be open to learning from setbacks in order to innovate the future. In the coming years, he hopes to help make Florida the center of the American semiconductor chip industry with a focus on specialty electronics, and to use his work in public-private partnership development to transition into an academic or civil leadership role. Outside of academia, Dr. Sorger is a licensed and instrument rated pilot and enjoys flying his own plane on his many cross-country business trips.
