After a distinguished tenure in journalism that spanned 30 years, Mr. Shapiro retired. Working in both radio and television, he notably served as a reporter and disc jockey for KTAR AM-FM-TV (NBC) owned by Combined Communications and KOOL-AM-FM-TV (CBS) owned by Tom Chauncey KOOL-AM-FM-TV, Inc. at the time. During his years on the radio, Mr. Shapiro conducted more than 100 hours of interviews with major entertainers. He was affiliated with a multitude of other news stations, including NBC and CBS, spent 15 years as a successful sports television announcer for high school football, basketball, and baseball, and frequently contributed sports-related articles to local magazines as an expert in the field.
Heavily engaged in the nonprofit sector, Mr. Shapiro has retired from serving as director of investor relations and director of operations for the Glendale Chamber of Commerce following a 33-year career. He has also served as the district director for the Arizona Jaycees, as a board member for the Deer Valley Education Foundation, as the co-chair of the Seton Hall University Alumni Association of Arizona, and founding member of the Glendale Ambassadors. Most notably, Mr. Shapiro has been a member of Kiwanis International, a volunteer service organization, for many years. He more recently served as Kiwanis's southwest district governor from 2019 to 2020 and previously lent his expertise as a four-time district lieutenant governor and two-time district convention chairperson. During his tenure, he was involved in membership development and retention and event sales and marketing, and he frequently spoke publicly at various events on an array of topics. Humbled by the opportunity to serve others, Mr. Shapiro genuinely enjoys helping people and he looks forward to additional volunteer opportunities in the future.
Mr. Shapiro graduated from high school in North Arlington, New Jersey. He subsequently attended Seton Hall University, a private Catholic university in South Orange, New Jersey, where he acquired a Bachelor of Arts in communication in 1970.
Highlighting his contributions, Mr. Shapiro was recognized with a George F. Hixson fellowship and a Walter Zeller fellowship by Kiwanis International.
